Totally stuck for girls names - overthinking this ??

Our DS has an unusual but 'old fashioned' but strong name. We love it, family loves it and it totally suits him. But I am not stuck on theme names, so girls name doesn't need to also be old-fashioned but I do like Unusual-Classic. Both DH and I have got unusual names. Mine so much so it has never featured on any MN list, ever!

No names that end with 'ee' (as DS's name is a **y and two names ending with Y or an ee sound make me think of a pair of small lap dogs Blush )

Names that that have made it as far as a being considered are :

Pepper
Cressida
Willow

  1. Cressida was extremely popular with both of us as a name for DS if he has been a DD when he was born 5 years ago but less so now as now there is Cressida Bonas (my objection)
  1. There is a very unattractive car called a Cressida - albeit not in production anymore and not in our main country of residence (DH's objection)

Would these things matter to you ? I have visions of Harry marrying Cressida Bonas and there being a wave of little Cress's..

Pepper is pretty unusual (odd to some I am sure) but is a family name further back. Both previous Pepper's were very successful women.

I like Willow but only a bit, but it sounds a bit.. hippy and although we are a quirky, kind of international kind of family, we are not at all bohemian really! And, although both of us are very tall, slender isn't really a family trait, we are more 'Oak' or 'Plane' Grin and Willow, to my mind creates a tall, slender image.. Is that just me ? Am I just preggo-hormone mad and overthinking everything ?

Not too bothered by being Unusual/Unique per se Legion but we aren't (no offence to anyone) a family of Sarahs/Emmas/Arlos/Peters etc.

We are a little unusual but aren't naming to be unusual. Does that make sense ? I don't care about TV associations and wouldn't freak out if there was three of the same name in a class of children etc. I don't even mind too much if it's a name used in Celeb-Land, like Lila, as long as it wasn't so popular it was everywhere. I couldn't do the likes of Amelie (I know 7!) or Eva/Ava/Jessica etc as again I know/know of so many.

The top 10 are just that for a reason, lovely names but they are just too many of them Smile

I like that arty connection basking And Dutch/Belgian close enough - DH's family come from two villages still with his Surname. One in Belgium and one in Holland so we can do Dutch!

Saskia is a beautiful name, it was on our list for DD, who is now Genevieve. We get the car/film mentioned every time we introduce her, but that's ok because it's a beauty of a machine.

MrsPretoria · 15/07/2014 13:45

I immediately pronounce with a flatter sound. Sass-kee-ah. There is a harder sound for the 'S' in Afrikaans/Dutch so it would potentially be 'Zahs-Kee-uh' but I wouldn't pronounce it that way. I prefer the softer S.

One of my middle names is Genevieve Mogz.. it is a beautiful name. I had it added after the Patron St Of Paris but I get the car refs too from time to time.

That's a pronunciation minefield too - mine is pronounced the French way. A friend of my parents has a Genevieve and it's pr. Jeen-A-Veev.

MrsPretoria · 15/07/2014 13:49

sorry.. too many eee's.. Jen-A-Veev

Aaargh, DH has texted. Not Saskia.

Whyyy!?

Has anyone managed to turn around the opinion of a DH/DP ? We both loved DS name so there was never any issue. This time though... grrrrrr.

Cassia?

It's a yellow flowering tree with some sort of cinnamon type bark. Thought it's similar to Cressida and Saskia.

Legionofboom · 15/07/2014 13:56

Saskia is a lovely name, it is both strong and feminine.

It's also especially nice to find a name that has some links to your DH's Dutch heritage.

TheRedQueen · 15/07/2014 13:58

Grania?

Legionofboom · 15/07/2014 13:59

Oops cross posted.

MrsPretoria · 15/07/2014 14:02

Cassia is ok but I think I'd prefer either Cressida or Saskia.

My great-aunty is Grania. I couldn't name after her, she'd never stop going on about it!

When I say 'She' .. she is dead. But her children anyway..

How do I go about changing DH's mind about this. I really like that name. It could be the one.

CheerfulYank · 15/07/2014 14:04

Love Saskia.

Phaedra? Aurora? Sylvia? (I know, it's got a y) Alessia? Susannah?

I'm just throwing out random names now. :o

Legionofboom · 15/07/2014 14:08

What are your DH's objections to the name Saskia?

MrsPretoria · 15/07/2014 14:09

Grin CheerfulYank .. it's all you can do with people as rubbish at choosing a name as us! Thanks.

I like Sylvie but the Y.. the Y ... I can't get past the Y.

He didn't say Legion.. he's at work and I know he is busy but all I got was 'No. Don't like that.'

Grrrr.

I like saskia but not keen on the others. How about:

  • Iris
  • Theodora
  • Saphire
  • Estelle
  • Acacia
Artandco · 15/07/2014 14:12

Or Sascha

MrsPretoria · 15/07/2014 14:14

Have to go and do something actually useful for a bit. This has been really helpful though, will be back later.

I like Theodora - is that Teddy though or worse.. 'Dora' ... (I have a deep loathing of Dora The Explorer)

CheerfulYank · 15/07/2014 14:14

Silvia/Silvana? Simone? Adira? Amabel?

You could get Hattie from Henrietta as well :)

Helena, Violet, Beatrice, Delphine, Rosabelle?

mrsnec · 15/07/2014 14:15

Hi Op, I don't really have any suggestions, I know a Cressida and she has a few sisters but they all have Austen novel type names which I don't think are to your taste.

I came on to tell you that we managed a compromise. I had a very long list of criteria and thought I was overthinking too, I got very in depth into meanings etc. At the beginning he only liked one name on my list and I wasn't even keen on that. He told me to wait a while while he prepared a list of his own. In this time I decided I did actually love that other one. When he prepared his list there were 3 on there I didn't hate but I gradually gave him reasons why I was going off 2 of them then decided I loved the other one as a middle name. I left it at that and last week he told me those are the names he wants to go for.

Just saying you might find he comes round to your way of thinking eventually. I like Cassia and Saskia from the suggestions. I think the popularity thing does depend on the area and your particular circles, I know more Willows than Evas for example.

CheerfulYank · 15/07/2014 14:15

I changed DH's mind on Sam for our DS. He's almost 7 now and is such a Sam.

Artandco · 15/07/2014 14:18

The Theodora I know goes by Thea as nickname. However it's pronounced the German way 'teya-dora' ( as th doesn't exist there) so nickname is 'teya'
