Why? I've met a few Melinas before... Don't see what's wrong with it?

WhereAreMyGlasses · 11/07/2014 21:56

What's wrong with Melina?

RabbitSaysWoof · 11/07/2014 21:57

I dont get it.

Pooka · 11/07/2014 21:57

I know a Melina. She's Greek. What's wrong with it?

Wincher · 11/07/2014 21:59

I know a couple of Milenas - this isn't that different.

stickygotstuck · 11/07/2014 22:00

Was going to ask the same! Perfectly good name.

Melina Mercouri, anyone?

lotsofcheese · 11/07/2014 22:00

I know it's similar to malaena, but I wouldn't say anything.

BotoxBitch · 11/07/2014 22:00

Medically it means faeces that has blood in. Spelt Melena at work but I honestly couldn't believe it. I didn't realise it was a name

Bithurt · 11/07/2014 22:00

If they've already named their baby I wouldn't mention it.

goshdarnit · 11/07/2014 22:00

Bloody hell! Grin
It's a name that has an alternate meaning in health care.

We've all walked on the ward and said is everything ok, I can smell maleana...

BotoxBitch · 11/07/2014 22:01

I spent my first couple of years working on a gastrointestinal ward, Melena was referred to numerous times a shift

It makes me immediatlely think of my old dog, who suffered from melena.

palindromicnumer · 11/07/2014 22:02

Melina when pronounced Meh-lee-nah, it's a lovely name. Greek name. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melina_Mercouri

coppertop · 11/07/2014 22:03

But non-medical people would surely only think of it as a Greek name? Confused

It's an actual name, though. Greek origin. The poo issue only transpires if you Google Melina+medical and it diverts to melena.

Don't say anything! Almost no one else will make the association. No point ruining it for the parents.

Madratlady · 11/07/2014 22:04

That's always the first thing that comes to mi d for me too Op. I also met a Candida once.

BotoxBitch · 11/07/2014 22:05

Part of me thinks if it was me, and I found out later, and then knew my friend knew but didn't say anything would be incredibly pissed off. If there's one thigh you don't want your child associated with it's blood stained poo Sad

Didactylos · 11/07/2014 22:06

oh dear
but I used to know an indian HCP called Melena (correct spelling)
Amelia gets me too

BotoxBitch · 11/07/2014 22:06

Hey don't Confused me I'm here for advice, it was the first thing that come to my mind and was asking if it did the same

annielewis · 11/07/2014 22:06

Ha, I've met a few and had a little private snigger but as others have said its a traditional Greek name ( and other nationalities too but can't think right now)

I'm a nurse and have always assumed that non medical folk are just nicely oblivious.....

Wickeddevil · 11/07/2014 22:09

No I've had a quiet snigger or too before now, and I've met a couple of Melina/Melenas
Same as I could never live in a rose cottage.

AdoraBell · 11/07/2014 22:09

Maybe as a nurse you are more aware than the average person?

I know a Melina, Colombian, but had never heard of melena until this thread.

BOFster · 11/07/2014 22:11

Ok, you're going to have to explain rose cottage to me...

AdoraBell · 11/07/2014 22:11

What is it about Amelia then? come on tell me what my niece's name means.
