Anyone know one or got one who is "just" Joe or Joey (not Joseph?)

I dont like the name Joseph, and it makes my teeth itch when I hear it pronounced Jo-Ziff (thanks Corrie) but like Joey (also like Joe but DH prefers Joey).

Our DD has a "shortening" as her full name but it seems to stand alone very well: Meg. Noone yet has tried to call her Megan or Margaret ( neither of which we liked ) so im not averse at all to having a shortening on the BC, I just dont know whether Joey is just too nicknamey.

Joe
Joey
Neither?

Joe or Joseph are nice names

Not Joey

Branleuse · 10/07/2014 22:57

you could keep him in your pouch

ButterflyOfFreedom · 10/07/2014 22:58

Of course it's fine and a name in its own right.
I don't know any but wouldn't think anything of hearing the name Joey nor would I think it must be a shortening for Joseph.
Wasn't there a baby Joey on the latest episode of OBEM...?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 10/07/2014 23:01

Yes thats what got me thinking Grin

Its rare to get dh to agree to any of my suggestions or for me to agree to any of his so when he said he liked Joey ive sort of jumped on it.

I am a Joey, shortened from my actual name (female). I have met a few other female joeys along the way, all also shortened from another name, but no male ones. I personally don't like it as a given name.

Alisvolatpropiis · 10/07/2014 23:06

I know a couple of Joe's who are Joe, not Joseph.

Not keen on Joey though.

oxygenna · 10/07/2014 23:45

I think of budgies and gangstas. Short for Joseph? But then I personally prefer Joe.

oxygenna · 10/07/2014 23:46

And kangaroos!

oxygenna · 10/07/2014 23:47

I don't mind Joe on its own either. Just not Joey.

SaVred · 10/07/2014 23:48

Joe is so bland.

Joey or JOseph better.

Sophronia · 10/07/2014 23:57

I prefer Joseph but Joe can probably stand on it's own. You could use Joe and call him Joey as well. Meg and Joe would be nice as siblings.

moolady1977 · 10/07/2014 23:58

my dsis have a joel who is called joey and yes its for the kangaroo reason i like it personally x

ThunderbumsMum · 11/07/2014 00:00

Joey has connotations of disablist behaviour for people who remember the 80s. I think the guy's name was Joey Deacon.

Iownafourinchporsche · 11/07/2014 06:32

I like joey but remember the playground taunts in the 80's

cece · 11/07/2014 06:38

To me it is a word that is used as an insult. As in Joey Deacon.

lostlalaloopsy · 11/07/2014 06:38

I have a Joe. It is not bland but very lovely for a beautiful little boy. I often get comments on how nice it is, I'm assuming he will get Joey in school when he's older.

picnicbasketcase · 11/07/2014 06:38

Joe is fine as a name on its own. Joey definitely sounds like a nickname for something longer.

SanityClause · 11/07/2014 06:42

What about Joachim, if you are unsure of Joseph? Jonah?

silveryscales · 11/07/2014 19:16

I remember when 'Joey' was used as an insult, and in my area. Yes I think it was connected to Joey Deacon.

BethanFaye · 12/07/2014 14:26

My very first boyfriend was a Joe with the nickname Joey! He stopped using Joey as he went into his 20's.

I vastly prefer Joe to Joseph!
