I don't normally go 'oh nooooo!', but ...

... I just have at this birth announcement for a girl named:

Harlea-Rae.

I don't dislike it because of the hyphen (I just wanted to get that out there), but more for the mis-spelling of Harley. Which is a name I don't like anyway. And then it's hyphenated with Rae - nothing wrong with that, but it just doesn't sit well as Harlea-Rae, IMVHO. It's twee and ... just nah.

I had to share as there's no way I'm saying anything IRL.

I met someone yesterday, her children are called Forever and Ulysses. I shit you not.

badtime · 12/07/2014 12:04

googie, I haven't seen the spelling 'Lilu', but 'Lilou' (pronounced lee-loo) is a very popular girls name in France.

The person you met was probably a fan of 'The Fifth Element' who didn't know how to spell 'Leeloo' (the 'futuristic' spelling used in that film).

badtime · 12/07/2014 12:09

Williamina, you could say that 'Vanessa' was recently made up (if you consider 300 years recent), but Tabitha is in the New Testament.

williaminajetfighter · 12/07/2014 12:31

Bad time I didn't realize that about Tabitha. I was sure it was a 'new' name from the 60s. Must have it mixed up with another name.... Haven't dipped into the Old Testament lately.

I know a woman who has a daughter called Liyah, pronounced Leah.

She gets really annoyed when people pronounce it the more obvious, Liar Grin

Baffles me why she didn't just spell the name Leah.

PetyrBaelishsConscience · 12/07/2014 14:34

Dallas is most definitely a traditional gender neutral Scottish name.

NancyJones · 12/07/2014 23:32

I have actually taught siblings called William and Liam. I have also taught a very nice middle class child of educated middle class parents whose name is Hamish James. I don't think people always think about these things at all.

I think Harley is an okay name, and I do like Rae but not really together. I'm not a fan of double/hyphenated names, and I REALLY don't like the spelling Harlea. It just looks like the parents are trying to make a popular/trendy name original or "youuneeke" as opposed to picking a more original name :(

Kamelia1 · 19/07/2014 01:54

@ClashCityRocker it sounds to me like dysentery.

Steelojames · 19/07/2014 20:24

I know a "boobie."
Pronounced boo-bee as in boobs.
A 10 year old Asian boy...cultural maybe but in the UK think he may get teased once he reaches secondary sch.
Boo-bee, boo-tee, the list is endless!

Squtternutbaush · 19/07/2014 20:29

There is a Disney in DS class, her surname is very common (as in widely known not Jeremy Vile fodder) which makes it even worse.

MrsPatMustard · 20/07/2014 14:26

Around the time my DS was born there was a baby girl called Jezebel on the maternity ward. Poor kid....

SantanaLopez · 20/07/2014 14:28

Ferrie. Poor wee thing.

Ceadagam · 20/07/2014 14:55

Not a nice thread at all.
Communities are getting more and more diverse every day, there's names from lots of different cultures in my dc school, this thread may not be racist but it's small minded.

I'd be very interested to hear some names of other posters on this threads dcs names too.

Topaz25 · 21/07/2014 16:31

I thought it was a made-up or kreatively spelled name till I looked it up.

"Harlea \ha(r)-lea\ as a girl's name (also used as boy's name Harlea), has the meaning "hare meadow" and is a variant of Harley (Old English)"
www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Harlea

Beautiful meaning but I wouldn't use it personally. I think they will have a lot of problems with people not knowing how to spell or pronounce it properly, at first glance I thought it was an A sound not an E sound at the end.

DrJuno · 21/07/2014 16:46

Well this thread just has it all, doesn't it?

Some of these posts are ignorant at best and xenophobic/racist at worse.

Yuk.

SaltyGoodness · 21/07/2014 21:44

“‘For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?’” asks Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.

Some posters should lighten the fuck up. Stop being so bloody po-faced, please! Racism is never acceptable but we are allowed to have a giggle at the strange tastes of others, ffs.

PosyFossilsShoes · 21/07/2014 22:19

I met a little O'Shiyaaniyah (there was an accent in there somewhere too) some time ago.

Pronounced Oceania.

PosyFossilsShoes · 21/07/2014 22:24

(For those worried about whether this was just diversity, her parents were white and middle class.)
