Nick name Joss

Hello!

I have a little boy called Joshua. My elder child is unable to pronounce 'sh' and so calls him Joss! I've become really fond of this shortening as I think it puts a contemporary spin on a traditional name. However, before I promote it more, do you feel that it is a legitimate nickname for Joshua or does it sound too girlie or daft?

Thanks for you opinions!

I think it's fine. I actually know a little boy who's name is Joseph but nicknamed Joss by everyone so I definitely don't see it as girly

Yes, I'd assume it was short for Joshua or Joseph. And it's been used for boys for generations (look at classic children's literature - you'd think the entire British Isles was populated by noblehearted stablehands call Jos)

Nicknames happen - I really don't get the concern about whether something can be a nickname 'for a name'.

Joss is unisex - my main association with the name is (Mr) Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

I'd assume Joss was short for Jocelyn but wouldn't be surprised to hear it was short for Joshua.

I have a female friend called Joss which I think is short for Jocelyn but am not sure.

I think it's fine, I've actually met a male Joscelin with the nickname Joss.

Gingerjv · 09/07/2014 14:11

I think it sounds ok. not perfect, but ok

BreeVDKamp · 09/07/2014 14:42

I went to school with a male Jos(s)! Now a pro cricketer :) not sure what his is short for, if anything.

Wishfulmakeupping · 09/07/2014 14:43

Really like it :)

I know a man called Joss. I always think it's really unusual when I speak to him, and I'm not 100% sure I like it.

I know him professionally, and when we go to seminars or networking events, his name ALWAYS says Josh and he has to cross it out and correct it.

BikeRunSki · 10/07/2014 17:53

I work with an adult Jos for Joshua. Much prefer it to Josh.
