How popular is Thomas/Tom?

DH and I are really really struggling with boys names. I am begrudgingly beginning to come around to Thomas on BC & Tom is real life. I wanted something classic but different (magnus is my preferred name, but DH just will not concur!). So Thomas/Tom is something that we both like, I just hate that its so common!!!

So how many Thomas' do you know. Would particularly be interested in anyone in sw London, Yorkshire & Australian cities.

My DS is called Thomas but we don't live in any of the areas listed in your OP.

He is one of 3 in his primary school of about 350 pupils - the only one in his year. I am from a large family and he doesn't share his name with any other family members.

Popular names are popular for a reason - they are lovely.

I'm in Southern England and know a Thomas, 2 Toms and a Tommy born within the last 2 years.

Agree with PP that Thomas is popular for a reason - it's a great name.

I have a 2 y/o Tomos, we live in S Wales. I've met 1 other Tom around his age. It's a fab name that can create so many different nicknames.

I know quite a few from small babies to teenagers (and adults). I suppose it's fairly popular if I think about it, but it's not a name that I would instantly associate with being 'popular' (like Finlay or Noah or Jack) because it's not a particularly 'now' name which will go out of fashion, it's just always been around. I really like it.

I think it's one of those names that will always be popular. There's a reason why names like Thomas, William, James, Jack and George consistently stay within the top 20 ish - they're great names basically. I know 3 Thomas' - one toddler, one teen and one in his 30's.
Anyone with the name Tom is lovely by default.

My Tom is 9, lives in yorkshire and is the only one in his year of 60 kids. He was born in a year when Thomas was (I think) number 2 in the name charts. I think it's slipped down a bit since then so should be even less popular. It's a great, strong, handsome name IMO.

I know loads and am based in SW London. I know of 3 Thomas's born in Aus in the last 2 years. I must admit I do hear it almost everytime I am at the playground/baby classes etc. As someone said, it is extremely popular for a reason but I guess you have to decide whether it will bother you to constantly meet others with the same name as your LO. My 4 yo has a very popular top 10 name and I do still regret not going for something a little less common. : (

It's a classic a la James, Oliver, William etc..so won't date at all. A lovely name although I do know loads! I wouldn't be put off by its popularity though as it is a classic. Personally I'd rather have a popular classic name than an "of the moment" name...

I'm in Yorkshire, there is a Thomas and a Thom in DD's preschool (about 25 children in total) but I don't know any others locally.

I'm also currently struggling with boys names. I'd discounted Thomas as a uni friend already has a Thomas (we see them a couple of times a year, and I didn't want to feel like I'd copied!), but I keep coming back to it as it's a lovely name!

Also liked Thomas/Tom but was put off by how common it is. DD has 4 in her small nursery (London) which is confusing and I think it is top 10 in Aus too. A certain Tank Engine also means you will see the name everywhere! I think Magnus is a fantastic, strong and classic boys name. If OH not keen - what about Joseph/Joe, Alexander/Alex? Patrick? Underused and a very handsome name IMO! Good luck!

I'm a primary school teacher in Yorkshire and there are three in my class called Thomas.

My DH is a Thomas - and he is scrummy. Go for it. He was in uni halls with about 5 other Toms (out of 20 boys I think) but they all had a different nickname so it didn't really matter. If you love it, choose it.

I'm contemplating thomas for yet unborn child. I only know 1 though
