To go with a short one-syllable surname.

Is it a bit dated?

Its lovely. An underused classic.

Heels99 · 04/07/2014 13:57

Like it. Agree with pp. and lots of options for nicknames.

gymboywalton · 04/07/2014 13:57

its really lovely

ChaosK · 04/07/2014 14:07

Lovely name - my cat was called Jonathan so couldn't use it for my DSs who came along later!

RosemaryWaterlow · 04/07/2014 14:08

Thank you. Liked it for DD (who turned out to be a girl :-D), so it's been in my head for a while for a boy, but had time for doubts to creep in.

Lovely.

Nn Jonnie Smile

AWhistlingWoman · 04/07/2014 14:12

I LOVE Jonathan. It really is nice and I don't think it is one that you hear very much at the minute.

I was going to use it for DS1 but, when he was born, he didn't look like a Jonathan somehow. Still the occasional pang of regret as it is a wonderful name.

I would go for it if you like it!

cairocruiser · 04/07/2014 14:50

I really like the name Jonathan too - it's time for a come-back I reckon. The nn Jonty is an alternative to Jonny/Jon.

ShadowFall · 04/07/2014 14:54

Love it.

ARightOldPickle · 04/07/2014 15:02

Love it, and the only boy's name DH and I could agree on. Never used it though - had 3 DDsGrin

ButterflyOfFreedom · 04/07/2014 15:28

I really like it though the nn Johnny would put me off.

squoosh · 04/07/2014 15:53

I really don't like it. It reminds me of a 1980's estate agent.

Gingerjv · 04/07/2014 16:25

It's very beautiful classical name. But I would prefer modern name)

moggiek · 04/07/2014 16:31

It's my middle DS's name. Says it all, really Smile

RosemaryWaterlow · 04/07/2014 16:46

Hmm, yes. I think the nn Johnnie is the doubt in my mind too, but still really like the full version of the name.

Love it. I know a baby Jonathan.

florascotia · 04/07/2014 19:44

Squoosh Grin Grin Grin The 1980s estate agents I know are called Henry...

I like Jonathan. Am less certain, however, about Mumsnet nickname Jonty...

Nereida · 04/07/2014 23:05

I love it and I don't think it's dated. It's very handsome.

Poussay · 05/07/2014 12:48

I like it and was going to say call him Jonty!

AlleyCat11 · 05/07/2014 12:51

My immediate thought is suburban 1980s kid. With a sister called Sarah Jane or Vicky.

pancakesfortea · 05/07/2014 12:58

Allycat my brother is called johnathan and I am Sara Jane! (Though we are both known by variants as adults).

Hellojello · 05/07/2014 19:35

Jonty is lovely

Laundryangel · 06/07/2014 18:35

I have a 2yo Jonathan and am increasingly glad we went with it. I have only met four others since he has been born, three of whom are over 30 and the other is about 8 weeks old. But, whilst being relatively rare, everyone knows how to spell it once they have asked whether it has an "h" in or not.
Both DH and I like the nn Jonty and Jono but thought they were a bit too try hard when we have deliberately given our children regular names. For now he is a Jonny but I think that it will move to Jon over time. I did have some concerns about Jonny as a nn but Johnny Depp, Jonny Wilkinson & various other seem to have coped.
I did also worry it was too gentle a name for a boy but then thought of the examples referred to above and, again, thought that they seem to have coped.

Btw the other names on our shortlist were Peter and Nicholas.

Laundryangel · 06/07/2014 18:38

Oh, and since DS has been born, I've met two children called John. One is 8 & the other the same age as DS.

LadderToTheMoon · 07/07/2014 22:10

Thank you. Still really like the name and good to hear others like it too.

What other three syllable boys names are there? I see Nicholas mentioned above, but my mind has gone blank.
