Help! Girls name that goes with a difficult surname

Goldfitch · 04/07/2014 10:38

Our surname is Fitchie and DH and I are really struggling to find a girl's name because we don't want it to end with an ie or an "ee" sound and rhyme.

I would also ideally like a name with a family connection. Our family is a mix of Scottish, English and Danish so have considered the following:

Alexandra
Cora
Elspeth
Elizabeth
Penelope
Catherine/Katherine
Catriona/Katrina/Karina
Ruth

Do you like any of these? Any other suggestions?

Alexandra, Elizabeth and Cora are all lovely.

Elizabeth was my first thought when I read your surname.

Alexandra and Elizabeth are good because they both offer nn that don't end in 'ee' e.g. Alex, Sasha, Eliza, Beth.

Penelope will probably end up as Penny.

florascotia · 04/07/2014 11:16

I like Elspeth - pretty and under-used.
Catriona(etc) is nice, too - a classic.

A few other Scottish possibilities: Ailsa, Ishbel, Alannah, Davina...

IvyBeagle · 04/07/2014 11:18

Great names. Also how about Imogen? Quite like Kate Fitchie, sounds good.

Legionofboom · 04/07/2014 11:36

Lovely list of names.

Catriona/Katrina is an underused classic and I agree that Kate Fitchie is lovely but you wouldn't go wrong with any of the names on your list.

Goldfitch · 04/07/2014 11:38

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought of Imogen but I like that too. Also made me wonder about Isobel or Isabelle.

Is Katherine (nn Kate) too pretentious? Kate always makes me think of Kate Adie so a good role model there!!

katherine/Kate is nice, but you are running the risk of it becoming Katie. Depends how averse you are to the 'ie' ending.

florascotia · 04/07/2014 11:44

I don't think it would be pretentious. Katherine/Catriona and other variations of the name are 'democratic' as well as classic, used by people from all walks of life.

And a baby Kate would have the lovely 'Katie Morag' Scottish picture-story books (by Mairi Hedderwick) to look forward to when she got older.

Goldfitch · 04/07/2014 11:50

Definitely not keen on a rhyming "ie" ending!

Thinking about how it would look written all over school books etc later in life makes me cringe already

You should probably avoid names where the nn/abbreviation has an ie/ee/y then.

Penelope/Penny
Isobel/Izzy
Imogen/Immy
Eleanor/Elly
Charlotte/Charlie or Lottie
Victoria/Vicky

also ones like Kate, Rose or Grace which become Katie, Rosie and Gracie very easily.

What about

Bella
Rowan
Robyn
Isla
Anna

DramaAlpaca · 04/07/2014 11:59

Alexandra has English/Scottish/Danish connections and is a beautiful name.

Katherine/Kate would also work really well.

HypodeemicNerdle · 04/07/2014 12:19

Love Alexandra

How about Rachel?

BlueChampagne · 04/07/2014 12:20

Like Catriona; how about Corinna?

weatherall · 04/07/2014 12:21

Heather

Goldfitch · 04/07/2014 13:05

Rachel and Heather are both nice but are already taken in my family so not an option!

Alexandra was my favourite initially but DH a bit meh about it. He likes Elspeth though. He also likes Veronica but I'm not so sure...

I like Alexandra and Elizabeth, and like the nn potentials. Not convinced re Veronica - the only ones I have known have gone by Ronnie so you might want to bear that in mind if wanting to avoid 'ie/ee' endings...

fififolle · 04/07/2014 13:29

How about Eleanor?

Heels99 · 04/07/2014 13:59

Like Alexandra and Elizabeth. Your surname is great!

gymboywalton · 04/07/2014 14:00

all your name choices are beautiful
perticularly love elizabeth and alexandra

BlueChampagne · 04/07/2014 15:04

Fiona

MsBug · 04/07/2014 15:12

Like all of your choices.

I like Elizabeth but with the nn Beth not Liz(zie)

Elspeth could easily be shortened to Elsie.

How about

Louisa
Anna
Frances (if you don't mind alliteration)

Guin1 · 04/07/2014 15:37

My favourite from your list is Elspeth, but I'm not sure how to avoid the 'ie' nn (Ellie, Elsie). I also like Catriona and Cora.

Rtfairy · 04/07/2014 16:23

I think Isobel would work really well and is a lovely name.

Gingerjv · 04/07/2014 16:29

Penelope is one of my fav names;-)

TravellingToad · 04/07/2014 16:32

Laura or Lauren?

BikeRunSki · 04/07/2014 16:33

Iona ?

Isobel has the potential to become Izzie Fitchie, which sounds rather uncomfortable.
