Stellan or Senan

Stellan I suddenly like. Senan is connected to where my family is from.

Surname O'Hara.

These are boys names, lest that not be obvious!

I like both. Probably stellan a little more.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2014 22:23

I like both names.

Stellan is unusual & has quite a cool Scandi vibe.

If you are in Ireland, Senan would be seen as unusual but not totally out there, but if you are in the UK you'll probably get difficulties with pronunciation.

I think, going by your username & one of your name choices, you may be from not far from where I live Wink

MildDrPepperAddiction · 01/07/2014 22:24

Senan, definitely.

poulnabrone · 01/07/2014 22:36

Drama I name changed because all this would out me! Grin

I've never lived in Clare but spent a lot of my life there. This baby would probably be raised in the US, possibly here, possibly anywhere! We would give it the anglicised pronunciation, I prefer the way it sounds, and think life would be a lot easier....

Sorry, I should have made that clear. Sen-an, not Shean-awn. Which sounds too like Shannon to me, and in my life that is an airport Grin

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2014 22:40
Grin

DH would agree with you on Shannon: 'You can't call a person that, it's an airport!'

Flywheel · 01/07/2014 22:41

Senan - the anglicised version is just pronounced phonetically so shouldn't cause any problems. The other name just makes me think of Stalin

fanjodisfunction · 01/07/2014 23:07

Love stellan, love the actor and the name is great. Would love to use it myself.

GiniCooper · 01/07/2014 23:15

Senan, really love Senan.
Couldn't use it myself with our surname but it's my 'boy I won't have' name. (Possibly give it to the next puppy or subliminally message the children to give it to my first grandson, I can imagine the MIL threads then!!)

Nereida · 01/07/2014 23:42

Senan.

AnsonsVoyageRoundTheWorld · 02/07/2014 01:32

Either, they are both fab.

I know that wasn't helpful.

Fideliney · 02/07/2014 01:37

Senan has erm laxative connotations. Sorry.

singaporeswing · 02/07/2014 04:27

LOVE Stellan.

It's on my list of names I love that I will have to try really hard to convince DP.

Stellan with your surname sounds quite Hollywood-in-a-good-way!

KoalaDownUnder · 02/07/2014 04:57

Stellan.

I've never seen Senan before, but there's something I don't like about it. It reminds me of 'senile', and makes me want to say 'see-nan'.

Stellan with your surname is amazing.

AngryBeaver · 02/07/2014 05:27

I think senacot with senan.
Stellan I think Stalin.
Sorry, not much help!

Do you like Sorren?

Oriunda · 02/07/2014 06:58

Stellan is a nice name. Senan doesn't look like a name to me.

DogCalledRudis · 02/07/2014 08:23

Stellan

MaloryArcher · 02/07/2014 08:26

Stellan. It's brilliant. A totally badass name.

If my relatives/circle of acquaintances in Ireland are anything to go by, Senan is having a big surge in popularity right now. That on it's own would make me avoid it.

Plus I do think Senokot when I hear it Grin .

PurpleWithaMysteryBun · 02/07/2014 08:42

I love Stellan! Would love to use it myself, but DH says no. It is unusual name, (here anyway) and really strong

poulnabrone · 02/07/2014 09:09

Thanks all. I am suddenly very taken with Stellan. Oriunda I agree there's something about Senan that would hold me back, I think that's it.

Oh that's interesting Malory. That might put me off if we were in Ireland.

AngryBeaver I do like Sorren (Or Soren probably) but for a girl! (I know it's a boy's name). It's just not a strong enough sound for me somehow.

squoosh · 02/07/2014 10:37

I know two little Senans born in Ireland in the last few months so I agree that it must be having a bit of a moment.

I prefer Stellan anyway. Senan is too 'priesty' for me.

scandichick · 02/07/2014 11:10

It probably doesn't matter to you, but a baby Stellan would be unheard of in Sweden - it's a real old man's name!

poulnabrone · 02/07/2014 15:20

That's interesting scandi! You're right, it wouldn't put me off, but it is good to know Smile

TempsPerdu · 02/07/2014 16:08

Stellan for me - has a strong sound and I like the Scandi vibe. I have no Irish connections, and would wonder how to pronounce Senan. (Sennan or Seenan?)

Stellan O'Hara sounds amazing - like an Indiana Jones-style action hero!
