Rowan, Rowen or Rowenna?

Would you pronounce Rowan and Rowen the same?

My favourite is Rowenna but DH thinks everyone will say Roweeeeena, which we don't like.

With that spelling I would say 'ro-wen-nah'. However, I actually prefer Rowena ('ro-ween-ah').

I would say Rowan and Rowen the same, but I only like the 'Rowan' spelling.

mygirlnovember · 30/06/2014 23:46

We both dislike Rowena - very "whingey" sound to it!

I think Rowena is really lovely, I don't like the double NN spelling and have never seen it used.
I would pronounce Rowan with an AN ending and Rowen with an EN ending, I don't like either of them.

I would pronounce Rowan and Rowen the same, 'row-un'.

I quite like Rowenna, and agree it sounds nicer than Rowena.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2014 00:47

I would pronounce Rowan & Rowen the same, but think Rowan is a much nicer spelling.

I quite like Rowenna, but I like Rowena too.

If it was spelled Rowenna, I'd say it Row-ennah.

rocketghirl · 01/07/2014 00:53

I have a Rowen pronounced R-ow-en, but have lots of people pronounce it R-oh-an, which I was trying to avoid by spelling it this way. I considered Rowan as a boys name, but have found lots of boys also called Rowen.

pinkgirlythoughts · 01/07/2014 18:05

SIL is a Rowen, pronounced the same as Rowan.

mygirlnovember · 01/07/2014 18:46

Allalone - would you be so rude about a name in real life? As note, I didn't actually ask for opinions on the names, just pronunciation.

I'm pretty set on Rowenna but really don't want the poor child to have a lifetime of 'it's row-when-a not row-ween-a!'

mygirlnovember - as far as I can see, Allalonenow hasn't been rude about the names. She has just stated that she doesn't like some of the names, which to be honest, is what you get when you post on the baby names section.

oh and GO BELGIUM!

badtime · 01/07/2014 19:05

The only person I have noticed being rude about names on this thread is the OP, mocking the sound of 'Roweeeeena' Hmm, and saying it sounded 'whingey'. saying you don't like something isn't rude, but mocking it and/or insulting it can be.

littlejohnnydory · 01/07/2014 19:25

Rowena is always pronounced "Row-en-na" in Wales, I have never heard "Row-ee-na" but that's possibly common in England? I've never seen the double n spelling but if it's an accepted variation then more likely to get the pronunciation you want. I think of Rowan as a boys' name although I know it's in common usage for girls - dh thinks it's primarily a girls' name, otherwise I was v keen for a boy! I have never seen the spelling Rowen.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2014 19:32

If you think Allalonenow was being rude, you can't have spent much time on MN baby names threads. She was just giving her honest opinion.

mygirlnovember · 01/07/2014 20:38

Kelda - I have no problem with someone saying they don't like a name, if someone has said "do you like these names?"

I genuinely wondered if that poster would say to one of her friends "I don't like that!"

I do think the long "e" in Rowena makes the name sound somewhat whiny. However, if someone had posted to say "how would you pronounce Rowena?" I would answer saying "row-weeen-a." I would not feel the need to add that I felt it was whiny! I was obviously talking about our choices for our baby, and I hadn't mentioned Rowena as a possible!

I like the Rowan spelling

I also like Romy (different but similar IYSWIM)

OP people generally go on Baby Names to get an opinion their friends would not give them

Marcipex · 01/07/2014 22:15

DD is Rowan, I don't think there's ever been a serious problem with spelling or pronunciation.
I sometimes said 'like the tree' though and found people still didn't know how that is spelt...but it didn't really matter.

Smugfearnleyshittingstool · 01/07/2014 22:20

My sis is Rowena but spells it Rowenna herself as an adult. Pron. row en na, mostly known as rosie tho or Ro. I know a romilly. More modern perhaps?

1gglePiggle · 01/07/2014 22:26

Loved Pat the rat in Sons and Daughters played by Rowena Wallace

Sorry gone slightly off topic...Grin

BeckaH123 · 02/07/2014 10:37

I would pronounce Rowan / Rowen exactly the same.

I would pronounce Rowenna Row-enna, not Roweeeeeena!

All lovely names I think.

Theonlyoneiknow · 02/07/2014 17:26

Rowan or Rowena, not Rowenna
