Fionn

So not for a baby, just a question out of curiosity. I met a guy the other day called Fionn (definitely written like that, and pronounced Fee-on, or at least he didn't correct me when I said it that way). I was surprised as I had expected a woman, thinking it was a different spelling of Ffion. Is it a boys name I've just never come across? Was I totally mangling the pronunciation?

As an Irish person Fionn is the Irish version of Finn and pronounced as such. As in Fionn mac Cumhaill.

I love it and would have considered it for the DS I'm about to have were it not for the popularity of Finn/Finley/Finlay here in the UK.

I've never heard of a boy/man called Fee-on. It doesn't sound very nice or masculine to me.

peppinagiro · 30/06/2014 09:52

Oops. So it was pronounced 'Finn' then and I just mangled it Blush

Yes it's pronounced Finn. Maybe he just didn't want to embarrass you?

NigellasDealer · 30/06/2014 09:55

Must be the North/South divide. It's definitely Finn in my part of Ireland.

baby names of ireland has it wrong in this case!

DramaAlpaca · 30/06/2014 13:41

Definitely pronounced 'fyun' in my part of Ireland.

Lovely name.

peppinagiro · 30/06/2014 13:42

Oh thanks! Fyun definitely sounds more masculine. It's actually quite a nice name. Unfortunately I definitely said Fee-on, like Ffion. Mainly because I thought I was looking for a woman so asked him if he knew where she was. Ah well, I'm sure he gets it a lot round here. And at least I'll know next time I meet one!

Fee-on is the Welsh girls name, Ffion, phonetically.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/06/2014 14:57

Bah, didn't notice your post op.

Fionn is a lovely name, not heard of it before.
