Is Indie an actual proper name?

Having finally agreed on a boys name, we are having a girl.
My DP is now absolutely deadset on the name Indie for a girl. Not very keen on India and I agree that Indie is a cool nn but I'm not sure it can possibly be an adequate name in its own right?
Can it be short for anything other than India?
The name I love is Dasiy and we also both like Lexie but he has a bee in his bonnet about Indie now and he's grinning to himself and repeating it over and over again and muttering about how bloody cool it is.
Thoughts please!

Indira

Fugacious · 29/06/2014 21:30

Or Indiana

CaulkheadUpNorth · 29/06/2014 21:30

I know an Indiana nn Indie.

Teeb · 29/06/2014 21:30

Hmm I suppose you could stretch it to a Linda/lindy/Lindsey kind of thing.

But it will always be a made up name.

(No judgement, I like the word Marmalade for my unborn offspring.)

Poussay · 29/06/2014 21:43

I know an Indiana known as indie. Personally prefer India tho.

bishboschone · 29/06/2014 21:47

Indigo .. I wanted to use it but didn't .

Wishfulmakeupping · 29/06/2014 21:50

I know one but a boy and name is spelt Indy

Vijac · 29/06/2014 21:52

Indigo. Love that name, and indie. I think indie is fine by itself although it's obviously not massively traditional, it is a name its own right. Daisy is ok but I prefer indie.

burgatroyd · 30/06/2014 08:27

Indie is fine by itself. Reminds me of Sadie.
Indie nicer than Daisy or Lexie. Don't like Lexie

Indie is great

fledermaus · 30/06/2014 10:47

I wouldn't say it's an actual proper name, but it's as much of a name as Lexie.

Indiana and Indigo are lovely name and Indie is such a gorgeous nickname. But I prefer it spelt "Indi".

Where I live Indie is considered a proper name.

softlysoftly · 30/06/2014 13:57

Indira is a real name "Indira Ghandi"

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/06/2014 14:02

Indigo? Love that name

India
Indiana

DrFunkesFamilyBandSolution · 30/06/2014 20:25

Windy Indie.

I like Indira, massively dislike India as a name.

Szeli · 01/07/2014 16:38

I thought Indie was a 'proper' name. I know it as a boys name tho.

One friend has it for a girl but it seems to work better as a boys name on the boys I know.

India is a bit much, I like the Lindy/Lindsay suggestion and derive from there? Indiana is good but too linked with Jones

florascotia · 01/07/2014 16:53

No criticism intended, but am not fond of colours used as names. To me Indigo is a colour in the rainbow and a plant that is rotted to make blue dye.

Indira and Indrani are ancient Indian female names

India and Indiana are place names - but are quite often used (like Chelsea and Brittany) as full names. To me this works best if you have some connection with the place - family, travel, work, music, film, book, romance etc.

As earlier posters have said, Indie is a name in the same way that Lexie or Sadie or Trixie are names. It is a shortening. Your choice entirely, but perhaps it's better to give a child a long name so that they have flexibility as they get older, even if you plan to use the short version of the name yourself. To some people - not all - short names ending in 'ie' can sound sweet for a baby but rather childish for an adult.

MaxsMummy2012 · 01/07/2014 17:00

I know a baby girl called Indie, suits her perfectly and I think it's really pretty especially if you use a pretty middle name with it. If you both like it then use it.

singersgirl · 01/07/2014 18:25

Anything can be a name. Is Indie a 'proper' name? Not in the sense that it has been used for a long time. But of course it has been used as a name, so in that sense it is a proper name.

The meanings are rather odd to me; it's used a lot by teenagers at the moment (often ironically) to mean different and/or daring - as in 'indie' music.

I don't like it much, but that's irrelevant. Indigo is even worse.

singersgirl · 01/07/2014 18:27

I always love the 'really suits him/her' comments. Well, how many babies don't suit their names? We get used to what people are called and associate that name with them. What makes this child so right for the name Indie? A spirit of wilfulness? A slight purplish hue to the skin? What sort of child would not suit the name? A submissive child?

MaxsMummy2012 · 01/07/2014 18:35

Wow singersgirl having a bad day or something? Hmm here have a glass Wine!

Fram · 01/07/2014 18:45

Indie was short for Indiana. It was the dog's name.
His real name was Henry Jones Jnr...

"I always love the 'really suits him/her' comments. Well, how many babies don't suit their names? We get used to what people are called and associate that name with them."

Agree with you completely. Names are collection of letters used to identify a person. Pretty much any name will be associated with the person using it. It doesn't go the other way round!

rachel234 · 03/07/2014 14:26

And to answer the op, I'm not keen on Indie. I prefer longer, more elegant (imo) and more beautiful (imo) names. Indira is the nicest long form imo.

Gingerjv · 03/07/2014 15:12

Indie and Indira both sound good to me.

neverenoughwine · 03/07/2014 17:31

My friends daughter is Indie - everybody loves it.

If you both love it - go for it. It's not at all terrible, suits a small child, a teenager and I could imagine a cool, older woman being an Indie too
