Flora
Lux
Ariel
Lenore
Maybelline
Sheba
Clover
Willow

I love Maybelline and seriously considered it for Dd2 but was told it was crazy.

Which names from this list do you think are usable?

I wouldn't use Sheba, Lux or Lenore. Sheba sounds like a dog, Lux sounds like you're trying too hard to be posh ('luxurious'?), and Lenore I just don't like.

The others, I would use! Okay, maybe Maybelle instead of Maybelline.

I live Clover and Ariel. I don't think of them as products.

Mercedes was ruined by the car!

I liked the name Oakley. Then someone on here pointed out it's a sunglasses brand (I'd never heard of).

I liked Venus when I was a teenager but then they went and made a razor called Venus!

Does Polly pocket count as a brand name?

Some are really chavvy, like Levi, jack Daniel, Stella, etc.

I wonder if Apple Martin's peers give her iphoneesque nicknames?

weatherall · 29/06/2014 09:45

I also knew a Martel (cigarettes).

squoosh · 29/06/2014 12:52

Ariel, Willow and Sheba are all great.

Sheba is especially great.

Bunbaker · 29/06/2014 12:55

Sheba will always be a brand of cat food to me, and Maybelline will always be makeup. I quite like the others. What about Leonora?

squoosh · 29/06/2014 12:55

Not a single Sheba registered in 2012!

If Felix can soar to huge popularity despite all the cat references I wonder why Sheba can't.

Must admit I thought the idea of naming my child after a product was silly when I first saw this thread, until someone mentioned my sons name, oops! I think Flora is a lovely name, and Tilda.

mummybare · 29/06/2014 14:06

I love Willow and Clover and Ariel and Flora are both definitely usable.

Allalonenow · 29/06/2014 14:15

Chanel was popular some years ago, I heard some were even sued by the company for breaking trademark regulations, though I think this is an urban myth!

littlejohnnydory · 29/06/2014 20:53

We have a Flora. I've only ever heard the "spreads easily" thing on MN and then only after she was born. I would still have used it. I was obviously aware of the margarine and didn't care, so I wouldn't let a brand name get in the way of using a name I loved, as long as it wasn't anusol or durex or anything!

AChildminder88 · 29/06/2014 21:10

I have looked after a Ford, Clio, Ariel, Armani, Valentino, Levi, Chanel, Paris (I know it's a capital city not brand) Rover, Cartier.

AChildminder88 · 29/06/2014 21:11

I wouldn't use any...although love flora x

nooka · 29/06/2014 22:01

Where the brand name was originally a real 'person' name I don't see the issue, except when the brand is likely to overshadow the name. So Mercedes is probably thought to be the car rather than the girl's name. Of course that can change, like Felix, where I imagine that the first Felixes in that trend might have had a few !??s or Flora, which wasn't great when I was a teen, but probably isn't an issue anymore (I had a friend whose nn was Flora and got a lot of grief for it).

TheTravellingLemon · 29/06/2014 22:06

I love Ariel, but I think of it as a boy's name. The female version - Ariella, was on my list.

Rhubarbgarden · 01/07/2014 13:15

I love Clover, Flora and Marigold and would use them without a moment's hesitation. Willow is also fine.

I always thought Cymbeline sounded like a lovely name (wedding dress brand).
