What do you think?

I'm vaguely remembering a revolt hundreds of years ago. It's pretty. Obscure though.

funkypigeon · 28/06/2014 14:53

Depends where you live I think. Welsh is my first language so to me it's a pretty name and easy to say but I think most folk would struggle with the double l sound.

My name has been mispronounced my whole life!

guineapig1 · 28/06/2014 14:58

Lovely Welsh name, can be shortened to Gwen too.

SaltyGoodness · 28/06/2014 16:40

How do you pronounce it?

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 28/06/2014 16:42

Love it, but I'm Welsh too and I know how to pronounce it, and don't find it that unusual. My fave Welsh name is Ffion.

DramaAlpaca · 28/06/2014 16:42

It's very pretty, but quite hard for non-Welsh speakers to pronounce I'd guess with the 'll' sound.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 28/06/2014 16:51

Are you living in Wales? I agree it would be hard for non Welsh to pronounce.

Also, apologies, but it's the name of a hotel and a few pubs in my old stomping ground.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2014 16:52

You

I love Ffion but a friend already has a daughter called it

Also like Haf.

More for middle names as my dp is English and though he does a good approximation of the double L it's not quite right. I suppose he should be able to pronounce his own child's name Grin

How about Gwennan instead if the ll is causing a problem?

somedizzywhore1804 · 28/06/2014 16:55

Sorry- English person alert- is that just an alternative spelling of Gwendolen like Gwendolen Fairfax in The Importance of Being Ernest? If so I like it but DH has vetoed it.

somedizzywhore1804 · 28/06/2014 16:58

Oh and if it is I can pronounce it (and I'm from Essex) so I wouldn't worry.

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 28/06/2014 17:00

Llinos? (But your back with the ll). Susan, Angharad, Myfwnwy, Sioned, Elin???

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 28/06/2014 17:01

Siwan, not Susan!!!!

WallyBantersJunkBox · 28/06/2014 17:10

Oh I love Gwennan.

No it's nothing like Gwendolin, the "ll" has a specific pronunciation that is high impossible to pronounce by non Welsh speakers. That is also a lovely name though.

This kind of gives away my place of birth then! Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2014 17:11

you

One of those you just listed is my middle name Smile

Elin is pretty and surely nobody could go wrong! Grin

WallyBantersJunkBox · 28/06/2014 17:16

Yes Elin is lovely and a nice middle name.

funkypigeon · 28/06/2014 17:57

How about Gwenno? Biased as that's DD's middle name! But maybe a good compromise?

somedizzywhore1804 · 28/06/2014 17:59

Okay, now I've heard it pronounced I'm going to say that I don't think many English people will be able to pronounce that properly OP. I've sat here for five minutes trying and sound like I've either got a speech impediment or am doing a really piss taking impression of Ruth Madoc Grin

So if you live in England I wouldn't. It's a tongue twister! Agree that if you can say it and in a Welsh accent it's very nice though.

MissYamabuki · 30/06/2014 07:45

Love Gwenllian but isn't the story a bit sad?

Elin Fflur has a good song about her, it's going through my mind as I type!
