We live in Italy, but I'm from uk. To narrow it down to 2 names has been a task as it has to be versatile and pronounceable in both languages, I really like Elizabeth and hubby likes Gabriella, I have a feeling dhs family don't want elizabeth as they don't us "th" but I have said they can shorten it to Eliza, my issue with Gabriella is our surname starts with similar letters and sounds a bit of a mouthful. We have to decide as once I've had her a name must be chosen and registered, in order to leave hospital. How are we going to decide?

I like both but would it be a hassle for the child to be called Elizabeth in Italy? I can sort of understand the mil re the x because it doesn't exist in Italian does it?

SwedishEdith · 26/06/2014 19:51

And I agree that Gabriella Gabicci or whatever sounds great

BigBoobiedBertha · 26/06/2014 19:54

I like Gabriella best and I think if your surname begins with a G a bit of alliteration would be nice. I also think Elizabeth is a bit ordinary (sorry) and I am not awfully keen on any of the ways of shortening it.

If she is going to grow up in Italy I personally would go with the one that makes her life easier in Italy. No need to make her life more complicated by giving her a name that she might not be able to pronounce let alone everybody she comes into contact with.

Surname is Garbuglio. So garbriella garbuglio. Also she would be able to pronounce it, my daughter can pronounce it properly being bilingual. I don't see why I should pick a name just because of the country we live in.

I agree you shouldn't have to but the name will belong to your daughter so I would give some thought to whether it might cause any difficulties for her in the future

Nospringflower · 26/06/2014 20:08

I much prefer Gabriella but it sounds like you are set on Elizabeth and nothing's going to change your mind so you may as well go for it. Not sure why you're asking TBH.

slartybartfast · 26/06/2014 20:08

it is slightly a mouthful, i was thinking it was nice choosing a name becasue of the country you are in Grin and I thought that is why byou chose Gabriela
isnt isabella the italian version of elizabeth btw?

CPtart · 26/06/2014 20:15

Every Gabrielle/Gabriella I know gets Gabby or gobby!
Elizabeth is lovely.

PunkAssMoFo · 26/06/2014 21:47

Gabriella garbuglio sounds fantastic to me.
I like Eliza, but find Elizabeth a bit dull. Definitely not different or special.
Sounds like it may also cause similar frustrations as your first dd's name.

BigBoobiedBertha · 26/06/2014 22:05

Gabriella Garbuglio sounds great to me too. I don't think Elizabeth sounds nearly as good with your surname.

Yes of course pick whatever name you like. If you love Elizabeth then it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks or where you live but it won't be you that has to deal with it in the long run. Personally I feel slightly bad about the name we gave DS1. We love it but it is very long, especially if you add his middle name and it has cause problems in the past, particularly as he is dypraxic and his handwriting is bad. Form filling is tough. He has to live with the consequences of our choice and we didn't really think about that.

Mintberrycrunch · 27/06/2014 12:46

I do like Gabriella, but I find it a tongue twister with the surname, had considered having elizabeth as a middle name but, when she is older and has to sign legal documents she would have to sign her full name including middle names, I remember signing our mortgage documents and told to signe every name, the same on every page, very difficult when your not usedto it and it makes name even longer.

I've got two long middle names and can honestly say it has never caused me a problem - they're so rarely used - worrying about filling in official documents is such a non-issue IMO. I like both your short-listed names very much, Gabriella would certainly be more user friendly in Italy so that would be my choice for a 1st name. FWIW, I personally think it would be frustrating to be in a country where the majority of the population are unable to pronounce my given name.

Legionofboom · 27/06/2014 13:40

I can see why you feel that just because you live in Italy you should not have to compromise on choosing any name you like. However I agree with others who say that it might be frustrating for your daughter to live in a country where she is constantly having to correct people on how to pronounce her name. You mentioned early that you find it a bit annoying that your DD's name is so often mistaken for a different name. Are you sure you want to do that all over again?

Gabriella Garbuglio sounds lovely to me but I may be pronouncing it incorrectly. I also like Daniella too if one of you could be persuaded to compromise on spelling rather than picking a different name one likes and the other is less happy with.

Difficult when you don't agree though.

littlejohnnydory · 27/06/2014 13:48

I like Elisabetta - but if you don't like it that's a no go! Probably best not to discuss names with DH's family if it's causing conflict! But I think in your position I'd go for a name that works in both languages. Does dh actually dislike Elizabeth or is it just his family? Bear in mind that if you come back to the UK, Elizabeths are ten a penny, definitely won't be different or special.

Mintberrycrunch · 27/06/2014 16:46

He doesn't dislike it he just prefers elizabeth, I think I have been focusing a lot on nicknames we can give as I feel elizabeth it's versatile as like lizzy. With Gabriella, I would shorten it to gabi or Ella, the Italians would shorten it to gabri, and I find it ever so slightly irritating due to the rolling r that they do, suppose I am hearing my MILS high pitched voice in the back of my head shrilling gab-riiiiiii. I know i am over thinking it now.
