Is Farrah chavvy??

I've been trying to find a non-frilly, not too long, not too common and not old ladyish name and came up with Farrah. DH's family are Yemeni Jewish but with an Arabic surname so I don't think it would be weird for us to use. However, a quick scan of old threads suggests it is considered chavvy.

Is this the case? If so, why?

I don't think so, although it would depend on your other children's names. It's so I unusual that it doesn't have a image yet. It's a celeb name yes, but as long as you dont have a rocky or whatever for a sibling, I think it's fine. It's very pretty

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 12:25

its a lovely sounding name - go for it.
No idea if is chavvy - I only heard it from a friend whose surname it was and she used it as a first name as it was easier than her first name for british people to say.
oh and Farrah Fawcett but that was years ago

PandaWatch · 26/06/2014 12:33

Glad to hear some positivity!

That's the reason why I was surprised by the comments YouMake - I didn't think it was common enough to hve been pigeon holed. It sometimes seems like, if people on here don't like a name, they use chavvy as a default response.

No, no Rockys in the family Grin. DS has an uncommon but not outlandish Hebrew/Old Testament name.

I think it is a lovely name. Maybe it is considered chavvy by some people because of that awful Farrah Abraham off Teen Mom, however, I doubt many people will know who she is.

squoosh · 26/06/2014 13:58

The only Farrahs I've ever heard of are 1970's sexpot Farrah Fawcett and star of Teen Mom and latterly porn films Farrah Abraham.

Choccyhobnob · 26/06/2014 14:09

I know one in her 30's, of Indian origin. I think it's lovely and not chavvy at all

squoosh · 26/06/2014 14:11

I've thought of a third Farrah. The slacks.

tryingtocatchthewind · 26/06/2014 14:23

Not chavvy to me, yes the first one that came to mind was from Teen Mom but that's a fairly obscure 'celebrity'

burgatroyd · 26/06/2014 15:04

One if the nct mums is Farah. She's not chav. I think its elegant.

Quangle · 26/06/2014 15:08

The only one I know has it due to Arabic origins. I think it's lovely anyway and would be very fitting for you as well. Also always helps to have the odd Farrah FM reference in there too - but not chavvy no. Farrah FM is too old a reference to be picked up by all and sundry.

FreckledLeopard · 26/06/2014 15:11

I think it's borderline. I really like it but imagine that some would consider it a little chavvy. I do think of Farrah Fawcett and Farrah from Teen Mom though.

BreeVDKamp · 26/06/2014 15:13

No it's gorgeous!!!

PandaWatch · 26/06/2014 15:17

FreckledLeopard but why is it "borderline"? Is it just because it's the name of a woman who was a teen mum? This is what confuses me!

I appreciate all the positive comments though!

I wonder why you only appreciate the positive comments Hmm

This is what annoys me! If you are so sure you like it then go for it, you're only going to discard the negative comments anyway. Stop wasting other peoples time if you are not going to be balanced!

(You could have used a better word than 'chavvy,' btw.)

YouMakeMeHappy · 26/06/2014 15:27

I was referring to the beautiful Farrah fawcet. I've never heard of the other one. Yes elegant is exactly the word is use.

5madthings · 26/06/2014 15:40

I have a friend called farah, she is lovely, maths teacher at high school and just the nicest person.

So to me its not a 'chavvy' name at all.

Yes there is the Mum from teen mom but she is infamous rather than popular/famous?

Anyway it's a nice name, you have to choose names that you like. According to mnet ds2 has a dog's name, ds3 has a naughty boy name and ds4 has a gangsta name... Meh I like them and they suit their names.

SantanaLopez · 26/06/2014 15:45

With an Arabic surname it will be fine.

PandaWatch · 26/06/2014 15:56

Scotch

  1. I used the word "chavvy" because, as I said in my op, I came across numerous posts describing the name as, wait for it, "chavvy".
  1. I wasn't asking for opinions on whether people like or dislike a name, I was asking why some people consider it chavvy.

Maybe read posts properly before getting on your high-horse?

On baby names you really need to use the word chavvy if that's what you mean. You want to know how people perceive the name that you are giving to a person, not whether people like it or not.
What could you use instead of chavvy? Common? That's not very polite either. Chavvy is what every parent wants to avoid when naming a baby, and you need to ask IMO

scotchtikidoll · 26/06/2014 16:27

People shouldn't be describing others as 'common' and 'chavvy' anyway, especially children. I would not particularly care about the judgement of somebody who would use those words anyway.

I really don't know how a name could be 'chavvy.' You could get a criminal called Jonathan Snodgrass- Dimbleby.

funnyoldonion · 26/06/2014 16:33

Some people are so annoying

YouMakeMeHappy · 26/06/2014 17:29

Agreed onion. Scotch, nobody is Calling a child chavvy. There is no child yet. We were discussing names, not people.

FreckledLeopard · 26/06/2014 17:45

I'd say it was borderline depending on the context used. So, if for example, an Asian family used the name, then it wouldn't be considered chavvy. On the other hand, if someone who aspired to celebrity-status named their child Farrah, it might raise a few eyebrows.

scotchtikidoll · 26/06/2014 18:57

Instead of saying 'some people are annoying,' Onion, tell me I'm annoying. This is MN, not a 14 year old's Facebook page, with the thinly veiled remarks.

YouMakeMeHappy I appreciate the fact that it is names being discussed, but there is a judgmental overtone here. I don't like the word 'chavvy.' It is like slagging off those from low income families or people who dress a certain way. If I have missed something, or you mean something else, then please enlighten me.
