Is Elodie to close a name to Ellie (my name). I love the name Elodie but my husband says its to close to my own name?

Even if it is too close to your own name, that's not a bad thing! It might be nice to have that connection.

CarolineKnappShappey · 25/06/2014 14:13

Yes

Blueberrybaby · 25/06/2014 14:14

Don't think it matters. Many parents name their children after themselves, it's just not something I could get bothered about.

UriGeller · 25/06/2014 14:15

If you're not bothered about it. Elodie is likely to get shortened to Ellie at some point though, would you mind that?

tryingtocatchthewind · 25/06/2014 14:20

Lots of children get named after their parents so it doesn't really matter. If anything it will prevent people shortening names or you could use your longer version (if you have one). Wouldn't bother me

BackforGood · 25/06/2014 15:09

Yes.
Avoid.

BeckaH123 · 25/06/2014 15:24

I don't think it matters. Elodie is a lovely French name. Maybe Elo for short? Maybe that sounds too much like 'hello' in a cockney accent...

That's so weird, I know a mum Ellie and a DD Elidih (Scottish version but sounds pretty much the same out loud) I think its lovely!! It really suits them and its a nice link.

It's a lovely name although both your names could both be abrieviated to Ell,. Obviously I don't know if u go by Ell, Ellie or happy with either, so u could both be known as Ell, but lots of kids have the same name as their parentd.
I know a family who have a Jodie and a Joe. Now what if one day Jodie decides one day that she wants to be known as Jo meaning they could end up with a son and daughter both named Joe. X

Elsiequadrille · 25/06/2014 22:00

Yes.

Rhubarbgarden · 25/06/2014 22:35

I wouldn't do it. How about Ottilie?

princessdave · 26/06/2014 09:26

Depends if you think it'll get shortened to Ellie. My Elodie has never been shortened by anyone (she's almost3 so that might change at school - she's Elodie at nursery) but she's also very insistent that her name is Elodie if you call her by something else, like pumpkin or sugar plum. Kids eh.

NormaSwilley · 26/06/2014 14:40

I don't think it matters. I do think Elodie is a faddy very "now" name though, and will date badly. That would be more of a concern for me.

We're in Hampshire & never met another one. It's been my favourite girls name for years after numerous trips to France. I think it's a bit "80s" over there but I don't care. I wanted something rarely used as our surname is common & there were less than 150 registered in 2011 so it did the job.

CheerfulYank · 26/06/2014 17:14

I'm Megan and have a Margaret. We could both be called Meg but we aren't, she's Maggie. Still similar but it suits her.

Go for it if you like it!

littlejohnnydory · 27/06/2014 12:07

I don't think it matters. dd2's middle name is Elodie and didn't use it for a first in case it got shortened to Ella or Ellie (which are nice names but popular) - but now almost wish I had because I don't think it would necessarily be shortened.

Fideliney · 27/06/2014 14:18

No. There is a similarity, but in a rather lovely way.

littlejohnnydory · 27/06/2014 14:29

We've never met another either, and nobody knows what we mean when we say it! I wish we'd saved it for dc4 but others with a similar sound I've thought of are:

Aurelie
Coralie
Ottilie
Adelie
Lorelei
Claudie
Eleni

burgatroyd · 27/06/2014 16:36

I have a phonetically spelled Eleni, the way I want it pronounced (oy, stop it, you lot, it was after advice on mumsnet to spell it that way!). I love that ame, and Elodie, but there are a lot of El names around.

However there is only one Ellie in dd1s class but repeats of other names. So I'm hopeful dd2 won't have an Elodie, an Ellen, Eloise, Elsa, Elsie... in her class too.

Plus I've been thinking about this. Its nice to have similar names, eg different flowers. Dd1 is a flower name and lots of her class have other flower names. Its quite nice really.

So to answer your question its nice to be similar. Go for the name you love. Even if its the same name as yours.
