Just that really Fleur or Olwyn. Months until we need to decide but these were our girl choices when we had our little boy. What do people think?

I think fleur sounds prettier than olwyn

Rhubarbgarden · 24/06/2014 22:15

Fleur

bundleofnerves · 24/06/2014 22:21

I prefer Olwyn, I think it's lovely.

DitzyDonkey · 24/06/2014 22:21

Fleur

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 24/06/2014 22:23

Olwen was my Granny's name. I think it is really unique. She was vehemently Welsh, are you Welsh?

Fleur by a mile.

Better still Flora, or Freya.

MsVanRein · 24/06/2014 22:26

Olwyn.

A close relative is Olwen. Lovely name I think.

iMN · 24/06/2014 22:28

But Olwyn means wheel in welsh. Olwen is prettier imo and because of the wheel thing too

BestIsWest · 24/06/2014 22:28

I prefer Fleur but if you have to use Olwyn I think it looks better spelled as Olwen.

guineapig1 · 24/06/2014 22:29

If you're thinking of the welsh name is it Olwen not Olwyn. Typically welsh girl names end in the feminie "wen" and boys names in the masculine "wyn"". Think Eirwen and Eirwyn, Carwen and Carwyn etc.

Sorry to be pedantic and apologies if this comes across as rude but please don't use Olwyn with a y. Not only is it incorrect it is also the welsh word for "wheel"!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/06/2014 22:29

Olwen is the usual spelling for females IME.

I much prefer that to fleur (which gets autocorrected to flour!)

VirkeligRodet · 24/06/2014 22:30

Olwen is lovely.
Dont like fleur.

MsVanRein · 24/06/2014 22:32

Oh I also prefer the wen spelling...thank you for those of you who have explained it!

I am not welsh so didn't know the wheel thing but agree wen looks better.

Allalonenow · 24/06/2014 22:32

Fleur is just so beautiful.

Olwyn, very traditional Welsh, but not to my taste. If you are looking for a Welsh name how about Seren or Carys?

MissYamabuki · 24/06/2014 22:36

OP, do you mean Olwen? Olwyn means "wheel" in.Welsh. But I think Olwyn can be an Irish name for a boy?

Love Olwen, on the Mabinogion she was supposed to be amazingly beautiful( whoever saw her would be filled with love for her etc).

Notso · 24/06/2014 22:55

I don't like Fleur, it sounds like something you say when you taste something unpleasant.

Olwen isn't my favourite welsh name but I quite like it. I prefer Anwen or Arwen but not sure if Arwen is actually a welsh name or just from LOTR.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/06/2014 23:13

Olwen

Leeds2 · 24/06/2014 23:30

Fleur.

Nereida · 24/06/2014 23:51

Definitely Olwen, and spelt this way. -wyn is a masculine ending, -wen is feminine.

ViviPru · 25/06/2014 08:17

Olwen is great! Would add to my shortlist were it not so similar to my dog's name (no offence, my dog is wonderful)

BeckaH123 · 25/06/2014 09:21

Olwen / Olwyn. It's really lovely. Not a fan of Fleur at all.

peppinagiro · 25/06/2014 09:25

Oh I don't like Olwen at all. It was a real old lady name when I grew up, and it sounds really drab and dowdy to me. I don't think old lady Welsh names have had the same granny chic revival! But then, despite being Welsh, I don't like any Welsh names. I think they all sound a bit ugly, with a few exceptions like Seren and Eleri

Don't like Fleur because it sounds like bleuuuuggghhhh.

So feel free to ignore me as our tastes are clearly polar opposites!

burgatroyd · 25/06/2014 09:34

Neither to my taste. Agree with poster above.
