How would you pronounce Eirlys?

I'd only ever heard this pronounced one way, but recently have heard it pronounced differently (in a way that actually sounds nicer, but I think isn't correct!)

If you're familiar with this name, I'd be interested in your thoughts on correct pronunciation, and whether there's more than one "correct" way (regional differences, maybe?)

If you've never come across Eirlys before, I'd love your thoughts on how you'd intuitively say it.

Thanks :)

Does this sound right, then?

That's how I've always said it, but recently have heard it more like wireless without the "w" although hard to describe.

(In case you haven't guessed, I'm not a Welsh-speaker)

Interesting. There's one at nursery with DD and I've never been sure I've pronounced it right, especially as she's always playing with a girl called Alice too so it's quite a mouthful when said together!

littlejohnnydory · 22/06/2014 23:02

Yup, v hard to describe unless iyou speak Welsh, the phonetic sound doesn't really exist in English. I'm from North Wales and air-liss sounds wrong to me. Ey -rrr-liss is the nearest I can get!

Jinsei · 22/06/2014 23:16

I had a second cousin with this name. She pronounced it something like Ayer-liss.

drudgetrudy · 23/06/2014 00:08

Ay-r-liss in North Wales. Means snowdrop. Pretty name-a lot of ladies in their 60s and 70s are called Eirlys in North Wales

MrsMikeDelfino · 23/06/2014 00:28

I've never heard of it, but I'd pronounce it Ire - Liss.

Alisvolatpropiis · 23/06/2014 12:08

Ayr-liss

PeachTrees · 23/06/2014 12:10

my aunty was called eirlys and it was pronounced 'ire-liss' .

0hana · 23/06/2014 13:28

I went to school with a girl named eirlys and it was pronounced air-lease (this is the only way I could think to type it!) I think it's a beautiful name!

0hana · 23/06/2014 13:29

*lease as in pronounced like a tenancy agreement!

BikeRunSki · 23/06/2014 13:31

Air Liss

spiderlight · 23/06/2014 13:34

Yes, that recording is how I'd pronounce it, but with perhaps more of an 'ee' than an 'i' sound in the 'lys' - but only slightly. (S Wales)

bassingtonffrench · 23/06/2014 13:37

I'm afraid i wouldn't attempt it without asking first!

hellymelly · 23/06/2014 13:43

I agree with spider (West Wales).

weegiemum · 23/06/2014 13:45

My sil is from Wales, and it's her middle name.

It's pronounced E-ri-lees in her name.

Means Snowdrop I thing. It's pretty.

Guin1 · 23/06/2014 14:17

I've never heard of it before, but if I saw it written down I would pronounce it Air-liss.

RAFWife12 · 23/06/2014 21:15

By reading this - it is totally incorrect! However, someone I know who has this name pronounces it A-lish

My Mum's middle name.

Ire-liss with a very welsh 'rrr' in the middle. I loved it but my Mum always hated it so didn't use it for dd.....

it's never pronounced e-ri-lees by anyone who's welsh......

hellymelly · 24/06/2014 16:02

Dewi is a lovely name.

beccajoh · 24/06/2014 16:03

Air-liss

beccajoh · 24/06/2014 16:04

Never heard/seen it before btw.

BreeVDKamp · 24/06/2014 17:28

Never seen it before but reading it I'd say Air-liss.
