Arlo - How popular / trendy exactly is it?

DP and I really like Arlo, but I'm reluctant to give a name that is really trendy or faddy. We live in Scotland and I discovered that last year there were only 17 Arlo's, which is encouraging. Is it really popular in England? Is it seen as a faddy name choice? I know that shouldn't matter if we like it but somehow it does...

Hmmm, yet nobody seems keen on using Woody, after the original Guthrie. I wonder why? Wink

WowserBowser · 23/06/2014 15:27

I know of one

I don't know any others in the NW.

UriGeller · 23/06/2014 15:43

I'm nowhere near The town of Harlow and hadn't even heard of it til now. I'd think of the old movie star Jean Harlow if you'd said Harlow.

But you didn't, you said Arlo which is a great boys name. And though it is and will continue to be a very cool name, it'll never be "trendy" in that suddenly thousands of baby boys are named it and as suddenly it becomes "common" and is banished. Go for it. Smile

UriGeller · 23/06/2014 15:47

Lee Mack has an Arlo I think.

squoosh · 23/06/2014 15:51

Mrsfrumble I think Zoe Ball has a Woody! Although I must admit that I indulged in a bit of a schoolboy snigger as I typed that out.

singersgirl · 23/06/2014 16:27

Ask yourself how many Arlos you know. Now ask yourself how many are aged under 10. I have never met an adult called Arlo in my life (though I've heard of Arlo Guthrie), but I have heard it shouted across various Waitroses and swimming pools in South West London in the last few years. So my conclusion is that it is currently fashionable. Since I don't know any adult Arlos, I have to conclude that it is relatively faddish rather than classic.

If you like it, use it.

florascotia · 23/06/2014 18:53

Arlo IS based on a place name.

Either Harlow (as I said) see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlo or from an Irish place name meaning 'between two highlands': www.behindthename.com/name/arlo

It can also mean 'barberry tree' in Spanish.

WowserBowser · 23/06/2014 21:00

Well i am nowhere near Harlow. I actually really like Harlowe for a girl. But i wouldn't like Talacre.

The baby books we read for Arlo all said 'Barberry tree'

DearGirl · 23/06/2014 21:03

I met a mum with a baby called Arlo and was surprised to hear that they had recently found out 1 of their neighbours also had an Arlo

Deverethemuzzler · 23/06/2014 21:52

Arlo Guthrie was named after a New Town in Essex?

Blimey you learn something new every day

florascotia · 23/06/2014 22:02

No, I don't think Guthrie was named after the new town, but the origins of his personal name and the place name are ultimately the same - unless you go down the Spanish 'barberry tree' route ....

WowserBowser · 24/06/2014 04:35

Mrs Grin

singaporeswing · 24/06/2014 05:51

Love it. DP has vetoed it though.

It's reserved for my 2 future dogs - Woody and Arlo Grin

Rosa · 24/06/2014 06:09

Umbrellasandladders · 24/06/2014 07:22

Lovely name, never met any

Rhubarbgarden · 24/06/2014 12:07

Yes it's faddy. It will date.

Stokey · 24/06/2014 12:10

In north London - I know 4 under the age of 5

The first one I met in a baby group when DD1 was tiny, and I thought wow, how original.

Now I do find it a bit faddy. The Alfie of the 2010s?

AMI88 · 24/06/2014 12:41

There are several near me!

I'm not a fan because I can't imagine an adult being called Arlo. But as that wonderful saying goes, those who mind don't matter, and those who matte, don't mind!

5madthings · 24/06/2014 12:42

Given that in the last few years there have been less than 20 babies named arlo each year it would have to go some to become the next alfie!

It's not even in the top 200 names.

burgatroyd · 24/06/2014 12:54

How about Metro?

squoosh · 24/06/2014 13:08

There were 200 baby Arlos registered in 2012. I would bet it will have taken quite a leap when the next set of stats come out.

florascotia · 24/06/2014 21:02

There were 17 baby Arlos in Scotland in 2013. That doesn't sound a lot, but the total Scottish baby population is small.
