Thoughts on the name Frankie please!

Help.
My DP is absolutely dead-set on the name Frankie for a boy.
Apparently I agreed to this before we even conceived as a concession to persuade him it was time to start trying.
Which in hindsight was very silly.

I am now pregnant with said baby and the name Frankie keeps coming up - I am really not keen - I really can't think of any positive Frank/Frankies, I associate it with;

Frankie Boyle
Frankie Detori
Frank Butcher
Frank Spencer
Talk to Frank! (Drug helpline)

What does everyone else think, please either persuade me to reconsider it or help support me in persuading him that anything else (Alfie) would be far far lovelier.

I really like Frankie (much prefer it to Alfie in fact) but if you really dislike it it should be taken off the table.

Say 'Farewell Frankie, adieu Alfie' and start looking for a name you both like.

weatherall · 19/06/2014 15:26

It makes me think of the character in Angela's ashes.

But I think of it as quite a religious name.

squoosh · 19/06/2014 15:26

St. Frankie, the patron saint of Sister Sledge..

Lighthousekeeping · 19/06/2014 15:29

Very, very popular. It's the new Alfie.

Guin1 · 19/06/2014 16:26

You could mention to your DP that Frankie is also used as a nn for a girl. Mind you, he could then want to use it if DC is a girl...

It does also have the potential to be turned into a playground nn starting with W.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 19/06/2014 16:29

I'm Frankie , but a girl!

TaurielTest · 19/06/2014 16:29

I think "You were fifteen, I was twelve..." - must be the same sort of age as you squoosh.

Elliekins · 19/06/2014 16:35

Thank you all, I actually do quite like it for a girl but have an extensive girl's names list already that we (might) agree on.
Just can't warm to it for a boy, although he likes it so much I feel bad for him ... but I don't think I can live with it.
Apparently I promised he could chose the boy's name (drunk, pre-conception).
That doesn't count, does it?

I've already warned him the child would risk being nn 'wanky Frankie' but he seemed (cruelly) undeterred.

Aw I love it ! Reminds me of Angela's ashes too

MrsMarigold · 19/06/2014 16:39

Can't you call him Francis and then use the nickname Frankie - then he can decide.

KittyandTeal · 19/06/2014 16:41

Not helpful but my friend who is a stripper has the stage name Frankie. Obviously she's a girl but that's what it makes me think of

MaliceInWonderland78 · 19/06/2014 16:46

I'm absolutely with MrsMarigold

I personally hate pet names that are used as given names:

Alfie
Archie
Frankie
Danny
Charlie

That said, we're struggling with names. My wife wants 'Reuben' if we havea boy, but our surname has two syllabals which end starts with "r" and ends with "n" so it's a bit of a mouthful in my opinion.

How does Frankie fit with your surname?

BigfootFiles · 19/06/2014 16:47

Her off The Saturdays is called Frankie. I think generally it is more used for girls these days - shortening of Francesca/Frances I presume.

Frank N Furter is the other 'famous' Frank who springs to mind. Does your DH like The Rocky Horror Show?

What is it your DH likes about the name particularly?

CPtart · 19/06/2014 16:59

Frankie I would presume is short for Francis and is not nice...but Alfie is possibly even worse! I wouldn't got for either tbh.

DogCalledRudis · 19/06/2014 17:42

I'd prefer Frank or Francis

Elliekins · 19/06/2014 17:50

Ha, I appreciate the input, hadn't thought of Rocky Horror.

He is also adamant that it would be Frankie as the given name, not Francis/Franklin etc.. shortened.

I don't mind the name being shortened (Archie/Alfie) as I prefer the short versions to the full names but I just somehow think a child called Frankie will be naughty at school and don't want that to become self-fulfilling!
That might be because I know my DP though!

The baby's surname will be Blake so I think two syllables work better than a one syllable name like Max, which I also like...

I know no boys, but several girls called Frankie. I think they're all Francesca nn Frankie.
How about Freddie? Similar but much nicer imo.

MyNameIsSuz · 19/06/2014 18:03

I have a little Frankie, short for Franklin. We've had no negative comments on it at all (though maybe people are being nice) and honestly, I don't think it matters who else has the name. If there are no good famous Frankies (apart from two US presidents with the first name Franklin, and Frank Sinatra of course!) and have met a couple of other little Frankies recently so think it's growing in popularity.

I wasn't sold, we couldn't agree on a name at all and he wasn't named for days and days, but I have no regrets!

MyNameIsSuz · 19/06/2014 18:05

If there are no good famous Frankies (apart from two US presidents with the first name Franklin, and Frank Sinatra of course!) I really don't care*, and we have met a couple of other little Frankies recently so think it's growing in popularity.

Locketjuice · 19/06/2014 18:05

One of my favourite names ever! SmileSmile

molly84 · 19/06/2014 18:29

I know a couple of girls called Frankie so I personally see it as a girl's name.

monkeymamma · 19/06/2014 22:07

I think that it's quite popular (is round our way)... And it does makes me imagine young/young at heart, trendy parents. Not that being young or trendy is a bad thing! Is just the kind of name I hear and think nah, dh and I could not pull that off - we're just not cool enough.

monkeymamma · 19/06/2014 22:08

Ps your oh can kiss goodbye to any promises you made pre-conception... Possibly when he sees first hand what childbirth involves for you he'll realise you definitely cast the final vote :-)

Elliekins · 20/06/2014 14:19

Thanks Monkey, that is a very very good point indeed!

I quite like Frankie, actually, though it is a bit cutesy for a man, so he'd probably end up Frank, which I am meh about. Franklin is quite cool. Sorry OP, I am not being helpful. I am sure you can win dp round if you come up with a name you really love. That said I am having trouble getting dh to come up with any suggestions, but he won't just give me carte blanche either. Do men spend as much mental energy on names as women do? I find it hard to believe my dh has been trying out names since he was a boy and in the dead of night, and yet he still won't just relent and accept it matters more to me so I should get to choose. Very annoying!
