Jasper?

Does it make you think of a cat?

I think it's a lovely name. Dashing.

But a bit 'Oh sir'

CorporateRockWhore · 16/06/2014 19:37

Sorry, to me it sounds very weedy, wet, waitrose loud parenting type name...

Delphiniumsblue · 16/06/2014 19:38

It is the children's books by Mick Inkpen and Nick Butterworth.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 16/06/2014 19:43

:/ I guess the one redeeming fact is that I am not remotely posh and neither is dh... So anyone we met would know we are not being posh / pretentious.

It's a very nice small mountain town in the Canadian Rockies, and the name of my mate's dad's parrot... Grin

I quite like it.

I love that it is a precious stone and a town too :)

It makes me think of a dogs name more than a cat

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/06/2014 19:50

Also Jasper Tudor - historical figure who helped found the Tudor dynasty! < nerd face>

nasara · 16/06/2014 19:53

I think it's a lovely name and it is/was on my short list but I just quite imagine calling it across a playground - something about it makes cringe ever so slightly and I'm not sure why. To be honest, I think it might be to do with the fact that there's a little boy called Jasper at one of our play groups and his mother is rather loud and a tad annoying, but that's obviously not going to affect you.

I also wasn't too keen on Jas/Jazz as nns, but that's just me.

RiverTam · 16/06/2014 19:53

I'm not sure about it with a double-barrelled name, it will sound very posh then. If you surname has been something short and punchy it would work very well, but I think something plainer with a double-barrelled surname.

Allalonenow · 16/06/2014 19:58

I like it a lot, makes me think of Jasper Tudor, I've never heard of a cat or dog or any pet with the name.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 16/06/2014 20:00

Ooh ta for the history lesson too :) even more reason to love it!

Now , can I imagine shouting across the playground? Hmmm... I dunno! I dunno!

makes me think of a tall skinny public school boy running with legs flying all over the place - no idea why

I'd avoid it

KeepOnPloddingOn · 16/06/2014 20:01

eat
Ha!!! Love it...

Makes me think of the bumbling dog thieves in Disney's animated 101 Dalmations. And then all I hear in my head is Cruella deVille rasping 'I want those puppies!'.

That said, I like it. When I mentioned it to DP as a possibility for our boy's name short-list he actually laughed out loud. And then went on about how pretentious it is. Even though his own family is ridiculously UC posh
but I suppose that's why he would never want to use it...

devoncreamtea · 16/06/2014 20:21

Well I knew one in my yoof - v sexy and mysterious type. He made me a mix tape...not sure if that helps you name your baby Son though!!

Not posh or whatever (what's posh anyway??) Def a person's name, as opposed to domestic animal, sounds like you love it - why not go for it?!

ZenNudist · 16/06/2014 20:22

I don't think its posh. Associate with jasper carrot. Really think its a bad name sorry.

TheElectricMayhem · 16/06/2014 22:18

For clarification - DP meant that the name is likely to be seen as 'posh', which is why it's a pretentious choice and would no longer be used by UC!

I still like it. Don't let other people's ideas put you off the name if you really like it, OP.

TheElectricMayhem · 16/06/2014 22:20

Grin @ devon's mix tape memories

manicinsomniac · 16/06/2014 23:49

I have no idea why it would make me think of a cat yet I do remember, aged about 8, answering the phone to 'this is Daddy's friend Jasper, could I speak to him please?' I passed over the phone and went running to find my sister shrieking that 'Daddy has a friend called Jasper miaaow, miaaow, miaaow'. We were in hysterics and referred to 'Daddy's cat friend' for months.

I'd forgotten all about that until I read this post and I still don't know why I reacted like that. But it obviously made me think cat when I was 8!

I quite like the name though.

Delphiniumsblue · 17/06/2014 07:08

It depends on your age-'Jasper's Beanstalk' - Mick Inkpen published in 1990's. That is why I think 'cat'.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 17/06/2014 07:54

That make sense as I am mid - twenties! It must be a sub conscious thing.

I am undecided to be honest...

Delphiniumsblue · 17/06/2014 08:27

My children are in their mid twenties and it was a favourite of mine to read to them- therefore Jasper=cat.

Pebbles0934 · 17/06/2014 10:10

I don't mind it... No love or hate!

Unfortunately, for me it is a pet name as I know 2 cats and 2 dogs called Jasper. But I know lots of cats and dogs called Oscar so that has always been a pet nane for me but lots if child Oscar's around now!
