The 4 most popular boys name in the UK?!

I've never met one personally and have only heard of two in passing.

Noah is becoming quite common round here.

sebsmummy1 · 16/06/2014 08:41

I always know what names are popular by how often I hear then at soft play. Noah is very popular round my way (Cambs) and so is Rueben, Harry, Oliver etc.

Noah was on my list but my partner vetoed it convinced he would suffer years of hearing 'oi where's your arc?' Hmm

sonlypuppyfat · 16/06/2014 08:47

It was Jonah with the whale Noah had a boat!! Other than that I know 3 Noahs and all babys.

sebsmummy1 · 16/06/2014 08:51

Oooh I like Jonah Grin

Suddengeekgirl · 16/06/2014 08:57

I have a Noah. He's 5 - and the only one I've met in person.

Is it really 4th most popular? It's 16th in the 2012 ONS data, and the 2013 data isn't out till august I think. Confused

Think it was 40th most popular when ds was born.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/06/2014 10:23

I can't remember where I saw the stats saying it was 4th . I was quite surprised, the stats I saw could easily be incorrect though.

A close friend of mine has a 2 year old Noah - I thought it was very original when she told me but I suppose I don't know many children. Now I'm looking for boys names and Noah does seem popular.

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 16/06/2014 12:38

I'd say top 20, not top 5, but it is still on the up. It is now no.1 in the US.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 16/06/2014 14:49

I know a few Noah's. Ndn had a baby last year and called him Noah. It's cute but not sure of an adult called Noah.

Floggingmolly · 16/06/2014 14:54

Loads of them round here. I don't get its popularity at all; it's awful.

Squirm · 17/06/2014 08:35

It's very popular, and it's number 1 in the US.
Noah, Joshua, Isaac, Reuben and Jacob are the Paul, Mark, Jason of this generation.

mandbaby · 17/06/2014 13:12

My DC1 is Noah, and 5 years later it's still by far my most favourite name. We did get a few funny looks when he was first born - not many people had really heard of it, but it IS very popular now. And understandably so - it's a gorgeous name.

HopOnMyChooChoo · 19/06/2014 14:37

Not many people had heard of it?! That can't be true, surely!

Maybe you mean they just hadn't heard it used in the last 2000 years! Wink

Although I knew a Noah once and he'd be about 35 now.

BeckaH123 · 19/06/2014 14:39

I know 2 Noahs - both between 2 and 4 yo. Oh and that actor from ER!

Rhubarbgarden · 19/06/2014 16:47

Dozens of them at the local primary school. Loathe it, personally.

mandbaby · 23/06/2014 09:40

HopOnMyChooChoo when I said not many people had really heard of it, I meant heard of it being used, today well, 5 years ago as a name. Obviously everyone knows Noah's Ark, but we used to get funny looks off people as though we'd decided to call him Jesus or Moses!

MojitoCake · 23/06/2014 10:46

I know a few, I think it is very popular along with Jacob (I love both names so I don't mean that as a critique, just an observation).

CaulkheadUpNorth · 23/06/2014 10:54

I'm in Birmingham and know nine Noah's. It's possibly the most popular boys name I know of here.

Frikadellen · 23/06/2014 19:20

I have come across a lot in my work (under 5s) it is still a pretty name though.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 23/06/2014 21:42

In 2012 (the last year date is available for in England and Wales), Noah was ranked #14.

The 2013 stats won't be out until August time.

Scotland produces its own data, and the 2013 data is available for Scotland, and it was ranked #14 (an increase of 15 places from its position in 2012).

Noah's highest ranking within the UK, is in Northern Island, where it ranked #6 in 2013 (up from #10 in 2012).

As others have said, here in the States, it was the #1 name in 2013.

jaundicedoutlook · 23/06/2014 23:03

no.9 in the 2013 ONS list, albeit not come across one personally.

For my own tastes it comes across as a little aggressively biblical, though if that is an attraction then I guess it is snappier than Nebuchadnezzar...
