My girls shortlist - need opinions on more unusual names?

Our baby girl is due in 3 weeks and quite set on our short list & then will decide when we see her...but suddenly I am going back to a few of the more unusual names we considered as don't want to be calling out her name in the playground in 5 years and realising that I've chosen a really popular and overused name...obviously you can't predict what names will become popular in 5 years and I know by that time I'll love it as 'her name' but just wanted to consider some more unusual names in case none of the more 'normal' short list of names feel right when she is born.

So, shortlist :

Ivy - after my great grandmother (it is also my middle name & the first name that came into my head when I found out I was pregnant....quite attached to this one and probably my favourite)
Etta - after Etta James
Alma - as in 'soul' in Spanish

(middle name will probably be Wren, as in the bird)

Unusual names we considered:

Echo - like the way it sounds but has a sad greek myth surrounding it & too much making fun potential?
Bibi - as in the farsi word for 'lady of the house'
Calypso - as in calypso singing...but too similar to Calypo ice lollies±!?
Beatrix
Eden
Sky
Phoenix

I know everyone will have knee-jerk reactions to these names as abstract words on their own but would be helpful if you could also consider imagining a person who is actually named these names and see what feelings you get about the name then...ie what kind of person do you imagine when you think of each name.

Any other suggestions based on my list are welcome !

Thanks !

Ivy- nice and I don't know any children with this name so unsure of how popular it is.

Etta- I really like. Maybe not with Wren though. What about Effie? Or Marnie?

Alma- I'm not keen. Reminds me of coronation street. What about Alba? Not to my taste but you might like? Means white I think?

Echo and Bibi I do not like at all. They sound like pet names. Echo for a dolphin.

Phoenix was on my list for a boy. I'm not keen for a girl. It's a Greek name for a boy?!

Sky is not unusual anymore at all. I know quite a few. Used to be my favourite name but not anymore.

Eden is ok, I know 2.

Beatrix is really nice and I live Trixie as nn.
Trixie Wren is nice and unusual.

However I really like Wren as the first name? Have you considered this?

Other unusual names you might consider:
Azalea (zaylie)
Nerys
Gaia
Nyla
Noelle
Meadow
Coral
Zeta
Nahla
Juniper
Blossom
Lyra
Marigold
Autumn
Blue
Posy
Belle
Faith
Onyx
Ember

Good luck!

All those on your short list are not to my taste, but all ok. I can't pick a favourite though!

Out of all your names I love Beatrix - you could then use the nn. Bibi so 2 names in 1 :)

florascotia · 12/06/2014 11:43

Agree with earlier posters - if you love Ivy, stick with the name.
Otherwise, I like Beatrix a lot, and Alma has a very nice meaning.

Wren is pretty as a middle name. Ivy Beatrix Wren, perhaps, or Ivy Alma Wren??

squoosh · 12/06/2014 11:57

Ivy - don't like this and am baffled as to its current popularity
Etta - Etta James could just about carry it off but it sounds so unfinished
Alma - hideous, a real 'Brenda' of a name. (Sorry Brendas)
Echo - no
Bibi - love this but would probably use as a nickname for something longer
Calypso - does remind me of Calypo lollies but also the Camomile Lawn which I love
Beatrix - boring
Eden - American soap star
Sky - a bit 90's
Phoenix - NO NO NO

squoosh · 12/06/2014 11:57

Yes, Bibi for Beatrix works well.

Provencalroseparadox · 12/06/2014 13:17

I like your short list but Etta Wren doesn't work

lljkk · 12/06/2014 13:40

Not Bibi as full name on birth certificate. The rest could work.

Lookingforfocus · 12/06/2014 14:15

Ivy is massively popular and is the new Lily.

hellymelly · 12/06/2014 14:25

I know an 11 year old Alma, she is half Spanish, I think it is more used there. Anyway, it is pretty and nice on an adult as well as a small child. I like Bibi on a little girl, I sometimes call my smallest Bibi, but on a grown woman it makes me think of those rather dreadful made in Chelsea types. Etta was probably a nickname no? Agree it sounds infinished. And agree Etta Wren no no no. it is like Iona Bull or Jenny Taylor. Echo, well I like mythical names, but your child would have to be extraordinarily beautiful and quirky to carry it off. Ivy- I like the plant so I like the name too. It is popular though, but that isn't such a terrible thing. Hate Eden, Sky, Phoenix. All too try-too-hard. Calypso is terrible, sorry. It is like calling your child Tango.

hellymelly · 12/06/2014 14:26

Oh and I love Beatrix. V. elegant.

Provencalroseparadox · 12/06/2014 15:21

Ooh but I love the suggestion of Alba too

Hakluyt · 12/06/2014 15:23

Julietta - shortened to Etta?

FelixFelix · 12/06/2014 15:25

Beatrix is the best from your list. My dd's middle name is Beatrix and we call her Bea Bea so that could link in with Bibi?

quellerosiel · 12/06/2014 17:04

Wren as a first name? Its gorgeous! Sky sounds horrid in some accents imo. Alma is lovely! Bibi ok but sounds too 'little girl' for me ie might not suit a grown woman (eventually). Could you go with Beatrix and shorten to Bibi? Bogof on baby names!

Provencalroseparadox · 12/06/2014 17:23

I actually like Biba for a girl and considered it for DD.
