Which do you prefer and how would you pronounce the latter?

Other name options at Imogen and Katie. Middle name will be a family name ( scots, begins with mc and 3 syllables.) surname is 3 syllables too.

Jorge-ee- na. And Jorge-ay-na ( though you'll get Jorge-ee-Anna )

Love Georgiana !

DearGirl · 10/06/2014 19:33

Jaw - Gee - Ner

Jaw - Gee - Are - Ner

Peanut15 · 10/06/2014 19:35

George-ee-arna like in pride and pejudice.

Prefer that to Georgina. Imogen is lovely too though!

gamescompendium · 10/06/2014 19:59

Like both but slightly prefer Georgiana, I'd say George-ee-ana. Are you only going to mix with people of your own country and social background? Because you will meet people who pronounce words differently your entire life because of their accent, it's difficult to prevent. So as a Scot I'd pronounce that 'r' in the middle of George, but as can be seen by Deargirl's post she wouldn't.

maggiethemagpie · 10/06/2014 20:00

I'm sure it was pronounced 'geor-gy-ana' in the duchess which I think is a lovely way to say it, much better than 'geor-ge-ar-na'

CruCru · 10/06/2014 20:02

The Duchess of Devonshire pronounced her name Georg-ai-na (rhymes with vagina). This would put me off it.

JimmyCorkhill · 10/06/2014 20:04

Ooh, like the Duchess of Devonshire. IIRC the Devonshire family called her Jaw-Jay-Ner as they were mega posh and it was their lazy drawn out way of speaking. But Jaw-Jee-Are-Ner is the correct pronounciation.

Much nicer than Georgina.

JimmyCorkhill · 10/06/2014 20:04

Cross posts Grin

DearGirl · 10/06/2014 20:36

There's nothing wrong with Georgina Grin

NadiaWadia · 10/06/2014 22:32

Like JimmyCorkhill says, correct pronunciation of Georgiana is Jaw-jee-ah-na, the other way was just a weird fashion of the time by the Duchess of Devonshire and her mates (see film with Keira Knightley).

But I would just go for Georgina really, nice and simple! Georgiana is fine, but maybe a little OTT.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2014 22:50

I'd go for Georgina.

Simpler and less ambiguous!

VanitasVanitatum · 10/06/2014 22:53

I thought georgiana was pronounced Jaw-jane-a.. Has been on my list for years :) :)

Alita7 · 10/06/2014 23:02

I prefer Georgiana, pronounced Georgie arr na.

RAFWife12 · 10/06/2014 23:29

I would pronounce it George-ee-arna. Much prefer it to Georgina. There's also Georgia?

badtime · 11/06/2014 00:14

As other posters have said, the 'jor-jay-na' pronunciation was an affectation of a certain 18th century upper-class set, to set them apart from the plebs who used the correct 'jor-jee-ah-na' pronunciation.

lbsjob87 · 11/06/2014 04:11

LOVE Katie ( cos I've got one!), never been keen on Imogen, don't know why.
Of the two, I prefer Georgiana and would pronounce it "Jorg-ee- AR-na" because it's a bit more unusual but I think you would have to prepare for some people assuming it was Georgina and mispronouncing it, but if you like both that's probably fine.

If, like me, you have a name people always assume is wrong even when you tell them it yourself and you hate the more common version it can be very annoying, but who's bitter?

The one other thing I would say is that is a LOT of syllables going on there! Which one flows best? 3, 3 and 3 or 4, 3 and 3? Only you know the other two names to answer that!

devoncreamtea · 11/06/2014 17:46

I would go for Georgina or Imogen (love Georgiana, but feel it might be a bit long with your other names. Fwiw I would say Jor jay na).

Katie is my name and I don't like it for myself - love Kate tho, which is what I use!

NadiaWadia · 11/06/2014 19:55

Um, but I assume you are getting that pronunciation (jor-jay-na) from the film? It's incorrect, as other posters have previously explained.

Lookingforfocus · 12/06/2014 09:43

We have a Georgina aged 11 so I am biased. She is very high energy, athletic and fun so I think of it as a high energy name. We have lived in a couple of nations and Georgina travels very well - in that most people are able to pronounce it and like her name. She has blue eyes and long dark hair if you want an image. She is charming and always in the middle of any high jinks. Out of all our kids she is the natural leader although a middle child.

quellerosiel · 12/06/2014 17:16

Georgiana is lovely! Makes me think of Mr. Darcy's little sister Smile

Umbrellasandladders · 13/06/2014 16:00

Prefer Georgiana
