Can I have your opinions on the girls name Ellen please? I'd be ever so grateful

It's my mums name and my daughters middle name had it not been for a sulky mil I would have called dd it

I know one whose NN is of course Ellie. Not many call her Ellen, but when she's older she may choose to use it and I think it's a lovely simple, graceful and feminine name.

Ooh! My DD's name and I absolutely love it. Simple and pretty! Unusual (I've never met another although have had the odd comment about it being a the name of a dearly love grandmother which is nice) but everyone can spell it (except a few welsh people who ask if it is spelt with an I) which also isn't a problem.

I like the Eh-lén pronounciation like Elen Rives but here it's more likely to be said Ellun which I'm not too keen on

I think it's a bit frumpy.

Does Ellen often get confused with Helen I wonder. Love it but would be wary of names that sound too close to other names

I have a mother who adds rougue Hs onto words and drops Hs from words they should be in (Oliday Hinn Otel anyone?) So this has sadly ruled out Ellen/Elin for me

I have an Ellen she is 6 and she loves her name. Nobody confuses it with other names.

Should be lovely, but reminds me of the comedian alas.

I love it - an underused classic

My DD is Ellen We haven't met another but everyone knows how to say it and spell it. I think it's classic and understated but cute on a toddler (which she currently is). We have had lots of unsolicited positive comments about it.

It's very popular where I live & I know lots of all ages from small children to elderly ladies.

It's one of those names I feel I should like, but I just don't & I'm not sure why. It may have a negative association for me, but I can't put my finger on it.

I love it! Due DC3 next week, looks like it's a boy, but if it had been a girl then Ellen would have been on the short list. Like it as it is, but prefer Nell or even Nellie as nicknames over Ellie.

I think Elin is pronounced El-een or Eel-in (Scandi versions I've heard) or Ayl-in (Welsh version) so not the same as Ellen.

Another one with an Ellen here. I love it. She is never called Ellie for short, though I sometimes call her Elsie. I've very occasionally had the 'What's her name?' 'Ellen' 'Helen?' 'No, Ellen' conversation, but I live in a part of the country where it's quite normal to drop one's aitches, and it doesn't happen often even here. Go for it! :)
