a late contender for baby boy due soon!

What do you think?

I also like Max, John, Joseph, Arthur, Laurence

I'd like to avoid top ten if possible

Really like Arthur btw

DorothyGherkins · 05/06/2014 23:59

This is the first joke I really understood when I was about seven or eight:

Knock knock!
Who's there?
Duncan
Duncan who?
Duncan MakeTheRhubarbGrow.

It always used to make snigger uncontrollably when I told it. I m afraid it's rather coloured my view of that name!

There were 31 babies named Duncan in the whole of Scotland in 2013.
info from www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files2/stats/popular-forenames/2013/babiesnames-2013-t4.pdf

There was also one Dougal, one Dugal, one Dugald, one Dougan, one Dougie and 25 Douglas. Oh, and one Dougray.

There were 2 babies named Donnacha, the Gaelic version of Duncan. (That is the spelling listed; it can also be spelled Donnachadh).

I know two Duncans (one is called by the nickname 'Dochie' - the 'ch' as in 'loch' - which comes from the Gaelic version of Duncan.)

florascotia · 06/06/2014 10:28

Dorothy In the parts of Scotland I know, to 'dunk' means to 'dip and moisten', as in 'dunking a biscuit in a cup of tea'. This dictionary says it comes from a word meaning 'damp': www.dsl.ac.uk/

But other Mumsnetters may have heard differently?

Amazingly, there is a whole Wikipedia article about dunking biscuits:

DS(10) 's best friend is Duncan. Also know another who is 60.

They are both marvellous.

Celestria · 06/06/2014 10:35

Love the name Duncan. Smile

squoosh · 06/06/2014 11:03

I prefer all your other choices to Duncan. Duncan is horrible.

Dazedconfused · 06/06/2014 11:27

decanter I love Douglas and Duncan my huband is Douglas and my best friend is Duncan but love both the names...know plenty of wee Duncans in Scotland so maybe it is just up here...

GrendelsMinim · 06/06/2014 11:28

That's a lovely name for a baby and an adult - not heard it for years, but why aren't there more Duncans?

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 06/06/2014 11:30

Scottish connections here - know loads of Duncans, none under 30. I'd call it something like the Steve of Scotland. Ok, but very boring. Magnus way nicer.

weebarra · 06/06/2014 11:43

I know a couple of Duncan's under 5, am in Scotland. It's a nice name.

MilkandCereal · 06/06/2014 11:48

I hate it personally. I think it's an ugly, unpleasant name. Your other names are much nicer.

Viatrix · 06/06/2014 13:15

I like it. I'd love to see Duncan, John or Laurence used.

mawbroon · 06/06/2014 13:30

I was considering Duncan for DS2 but there is one in the close family already so thought it would be confusing.

MyrtleDove · 06/06/2014 14:12

Duncan makes me think of Duncan Grant, I like it.

And the only one I know irl is in Scotland!

dementedma · 06/06/2014 21:36

Duncan is a cool name and perfectly acceptable here in Scotland along with Douglas, Stuart, Gordon,Ian,Ross etc. The one I don't like is Scott, but each to their own.
Love Joseph, not Joe, and really love Laurence with a "u". Wish I had chosen that for ds

MrsBungle · 07/06/2014 00:37

I'm Scottish and know no baby Duncan's! I know a few who are old. No baby Douglas's either.

emummy · 07/06/2014 08:59

bassington my Duncan is 5, there is one other Duncan in his school a few years older. I know some adult ones too. Is god solid Scottish name, and not too common.

PoloMintCity · 07/06/2014 09:02

We had this on our list and it was front runner for ages until DH used an unfortunate rhyming nickname for it one day and now I can't get past it! Angry
