If mrs Hathaway had come on mn 30 years or so ago when she was pg and asked for opinions on Anne what would we all have said?

Now she's famous does she transcend the weirdness of the name so it doesn't matter?

What if someone came on today and said 'I'm thinking of calling DS Oliver but our surname is Cromwell. Wdyt?' Wouldn't we all laugh and steer her in another direction?

Erm, I don't think it is a weird choice at all!! I guess you're referring to Anne Hathaway being Shakespeare's wife? It's not like she was particularly famous in her own right, I doubt that many people have even heard of her.
I don't think it's comparable to Oliver Cromwell, who most people would learn about in school history lessons.

I had a whole class of year tens giving me the Hmm face when I told them Shakespeare's wife was called Anne Hathaway, swiftly followed by Grin Grin they simply didn't believe me until I got a textbook out.

I guess in America it's not well known, or wouldn't be remarked upon. But yes, I'd steer a Brit away from Anne Hathaway.

her mother was/is a Shakespearean actress, the name was chosen on purpose

Jane Seymour was always one I was a bit Hmm at. Find it slightly stranger that she chose it as her stage name. I mean why? The least interesting of all of Henry VIII's wives!

I'd choose Anne Boleyn

I would have told her that 'Anne Hathaway' sounded very twee. But the actress AH turned out to be very twee so that worked out fine Wink

I do think Anne Hathaway and Oliver Cromwell are very different though. OC wreaked death and destruction on Ireland, AH had a nice cottage with flowers around the door.

Yes I suppose Oliver Cromwell is a bigger cross to bear namewise.

Yy to Jane Seymour though.

How do we feel about Thomas Cromwell?

Is Cromwell a very common surname anymore?

I've never met one live in Wales but it is interesting that some of these very well known people from history might not have descendants with their surnames
