Can a 3 syllable name resist a nickname?

One of my favourite names for possible DD is a 3 syllable name but I don't like the obvious nickname.

Have any of you/your DCs with 3 or more syllables been able to keep the full name in regular use?!

If it's a very obvious shortening then I'm afraid the only way you can stop people using it is by spending quite a lot of time being a bit of a git. Only for your child to decide they want to be called that specific shortening when they are 4.

You don't own your child or his name.

Sorry, Evangeline is four! What's the name in question?
