What is your opinion of the name Alison for a baby girl? Bit old-fashioned...? It was my mother's name and she passed away last Christmas. My baby is due in December.

Alison and all the shortened forms of it are lovely. It's a classic.

Sorry to hear about your mum.

If I'd had girls my mother's name would have been used.

BlueStarsAtNight · 02/06/2014 09:42

I think it's underused - easy to spell and familiar but not common. Yes it's quite old fashioned but so are lots of names in popular use.

I think it would be lovely to use it to honour your mum. I'm sorry for your loss x

Nocturne123 · 02/06/2014 09:44

Sorry for your loss Sad. I think it's a lovely name and Ali for a little girl is adorable . What a lovely thing to do

sonlypuppyfat · 02/06/2014 10:07

It's lovely really pretty.

OddBoots · 02/06/2014 10:10

A beautiful classic name.

BeckaH123 · 02/06/2014 11:27

Thanks all. I really like Ali as a NN too.

Alison is a really pretty name and Ali is gorgeous.

Alison is quite popular in the USA but not in the UK. Sorry to hear about your mum Thanks

manicinsomniac · 02/06/2014 12:05

I don't like it very much but I do love Ali as a shortened version.

WisemansBridge · 02/06/2014 12:07

I love Alison and don't think it's used enough! I love Allie and Alice as shortened versions.

Coral2094 · 02/06/2014 20:53

Love it - rally pretty, lovely nicknames and nice reason too. Very sorry for your loss.

janie2 · 02/06/2014 20:55

My sister is Alison and I my dd is Alice. Beautiful name, classic and underused IMO.

Sorry to hear about your mum.

SweetestThing · 02/06/2014 20:56

It's my name and I've always liked it. Shortened forms are nice too (Ali or Al). I think it would be a lovely name to honour your mum.

ToffeeMoon · 02/06/2014 20:58

It would be a lovely tribute to your mum. Or Alice as an alternative?

hugoagogo · 02/06/2014 20:59

I love Alison; I think it's timeless.

skinmysunshine · 02/06/2014 21:03

I don't love Alison but do love Ali as a nickname. Go for it if you love it. I used my mum's name as a mn (she died in 1988).

worriedabout · 02/06/2014 21:15

It's my name and I love it. I think if someone has passed away it is nice to remember them in a name (even if they bear no resemblance to that person).

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2014 21:38

I think it's a bit dated.

Alice is nicer

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2014 21:40

Not dated in a bad way. Dated in the same way Jennifer is. It's still a nice name but personally prefer Alice.

Sorry about your Mum Flowers

Randomnessesses · 03/06/2014 00:19

Not keen on Alison but Alice is stunning

BeckaH123 · 03/06/2014 17:38

Thanks so much for input and well wishes everyone.

I do like the name Alice but already have several acquaintances with DDs named Alice so I am not 100% about adding to the confusion! Smile

Alisvolatrpropiis, I actually like Jennifer / Jenny too! Blush Think I belong in the 80s...

Oh I like Jennifer too op Grin

Alison is a nice name and would actually make a change to Alice, thinking about it.

NadiaWadia · 03/06/2014 18:35

Alison is lovely and would make a good tribute to your mum. So sorry you lost her. OK, Alice is more fashionable at the moment, but that doesn't matter. I am sure it will 'come back' at some point, and your DD can be ahead of the field!
