Not pg but just come across this name and love it. What do you think? Shall I start the subconscious badgering dh into it for next baby? Does I make you think Scottish/Irish (we are neither).

It's Scottish. Lovely name. I like it a lot. I live in England now and think it's a bit out of fashion in Scotland these days which is a shame. V unusual down south, but it's easy to pronounce and spell so no misunderstanding.

NorksEnormous · 31/05/2014 22:06

I know a shonagh, who is Scottish

Weegiemum · 31/05/2014 22:08

It's lovely, my dd2 is 10 and has a friend called Shona, I know several my own age and had a great auntie Shona.

I also liked Rhona.

ithaka · 31/05/2014 22:09

I am in Scotland. Shona is a very 'common' (don't mean that in a bad way) name for women my age (40s). I don't know if there are many little Shonas.

SantanaLopez · 31/05/2014 22:11

I don't like it myself but I know a few of different age groups (another weegie).

boxofshells · 31/05/2014 22:13

Do you think it would be weird to use it with no Scottish connections?

I know a Shona she's mid twenties and not Scottish in the slightest. She's also very lovely as is the name.

EliandmE · 31/05/2014 22:39

It's an awesome name, and clearly anyone with that name is automatically awesome (can you guess what my name is Grin). However if you don't live in Scotland please don't add the extra "gh" to the end as it will be mispronounced by every supply teacher/sales person/public official your dd will ever meet. Also, if she was ever to run a marathon with her name written on her chest alongside her dh who has a familiar English name, every stranger in the crowd will cheer him on by name and not her because they are puzzled by the pronunciation. Not that I'm bitter...

kirstyd1 · 31/05/2014 22:44

I love the name. My mum always tells me if i had been born two weeks later i would have been called Shona as her friend due the same time liked the name kirsty. My mum beat her to it and had me first. But still love the name xxx

mum2jakie · 31/05/2014 22:52

Shona was a character in Twinkle magazine if anybody else remembers that! I always wanted to be called Shona!

hotteaorcoldwine · 01/06/2014 09:19

I just think of middle aged woman. It's the "Linda" or "Sheila" of Scotland. No offence to those names..but very dated imo.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 01/06/2014 19:16

Sorry, dated and depressing. Definitely the Sheila, Pat, Linda, Pauline of Scotland.

AWombWithoutARoof · 01/06/2014 19:58

Not keen at all, I'm afraid. Sounds like a name for someone a bit put upon and miserable. The plain best friend.
