Tamar

...for a girl. Has Biblical references and means date tree but I think river in Cornwall so would pronounce Tay mar. Too masculine? Bit like calling a kid Thames or strong and unusual? Opinions welcome.

The only Tamar I know is a girly girl, and it suits her just fine.

Being Cornish, it makes me instantly think of the river. And I don't know anyone who thinks of the Tamar fondly!
Is Tamara too feminine for you?

SquirrelledAway · 31/05/2014 19:19

And I also know a Teifi, pronounced Tye-vee (Welsh river).

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 31/05/2014 19:21

It's not a very 'nice' Bible story though is it? She dresses as a prostitute to trick her FIL to sleep with her and give her an heir. It would put me off completely.

burgatroyd · 31/05/2014 19:26

Teifi has a lovely prn but looks like tief, slang for thief around these parts.

Bible story rather off putting but isn't there another Tamar who's not so frisky?

There's only one Biblical Tamar I think. Never heard of the name outside of that story.

burgatroyd · 31/05/2014 19:39

Er... Just read the passage and she was violated by her brother. Oh dear. So many beautiful names tainted with tragic stories.

Sorry but I instantly think boy, and I just don't like it! Love Tamara though.

Marcipex · 31/05/2014 20:44

I know 2, one pronounced like the river, one with the stress on the second syllable,
Both are strikingly beautiful
I've never heard any negative comments at all.

soontobeslendergirl · 31/05/2014 21:00

I know one, pronounced with the A like in Apple. Ta Mar.

She's a lovely girl but her eyes a bit too close together

SpawningSalmon · 31/05/2014 22:00

I know a Tamar. She goes by her middle name as she got so fed up with comments about the river and things along the line of 'lion tamer'.

Fwiw I do like the name though!

ConcreteElephant · 31/05/2014 22:28

I had a friend at school named Tamaris (TAM-a-ris). She was named for the river - we were on the Devon side ;) I like it but then I had no idea of the biblical reference.

TheTravellingLemon · 31/05/2014 22:54

I know a few. They all pronounce it Tam-are. I like it@

RabbitSaysWoof · 31/05/2014 23:35

I like it.

badtime · 01/06/2014 08:25

I know two people called Tamar, one like the Cornish river and one the Hebrew for date palm.

I think they are both nice.

ejgibson · 01/06/2014 22:31

I agree with thursday, I live in Devon, the Tamar is a river. Its not a nice river! If you have ever read terry Pratchett's books the Tamar is Devon's answer to the river ank in ank morpork lol. To be honest I think its a nice enough name I just thought you should be aware

Perhaps consider Tamara?

Misspilly88 · 02/06/2014 14:10

I know a little girl called Tamar (pronounced Tay-MAR). Thought it was weird at first but I love it now, it suits her down to the ground- she is classically beautiful rather than 'cute'. I can imagine her having a very high powered job and what a strong name to go with it. Love it!

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 02/06/2014 16:51

Tamaris is lovely!

MollyBdenum · 02/06/2014 16:59

Tamaris was also an ancient Greek artist mentioned in Bocaccio's Famous Women.

spiderlight · 02/06/2014 20:52

I wouldn't be sure how to pronounce it. Tamara is prettier, I think.

skinmysunshine · 02/06/2014 21:06

I like it but don't know of any of the river/biblical connotations.

SageMist · 02/06/2014 21:47

I had a great-aunt called Tamar. She was always known as Tamar-Elizabeth (Elizabeth was her middle name), it was never shortened.
I think it's a great name and I would have loved to named DD the same. DH wasn't keen.

stinkingbishop · 02/06/2014 21:53

One of the Summer Isles by Ullapool is called Tanera. I always that that would make a pretty name, without any (as far as I know) connotations of incest!

Littlefish · 02/06/2014 21:53

I know a Taymar. Lovely girl. Lovely family.

CaptWingoBings · 02/06/2014 21:55

Why isn't the Tamar a nice river?
