How many baby Oscars do you know?

Oscar is the only name that I've felt could be "The One", but I'm a bit concerned about how popular it is (especially in Surrey, where we live).

So, how many do you know of?

I was set on Noah 5 years ago, but had a 2012 baby and it was everywhere by then so for me it was a put off but I cant put my finger on why because its the same lovely name it was before.

PacificDogwood · 02/06/2014 22:07

I have no idea where in the rankings my boys' names stand, but I was just saying today that I really like that their names are not common (none of my 4 has another boy with the same name in their classes) and overused, but equally not so rare that they seem odd (they each could think of somebody in another year group as themselves in their school of 600 children with the same name as themselves).

I don't care about listings.
If you like it, go for it.
I do like it and the 20 year old Oscar I know is gorgeous could be my son Blush

lornemalvo · 02/06/2014 22:08

I know one and he lives hundreds of miles away. I spend my days at toddler groups.

Bicnod · 04/06/2014 12:22

I have a 5 year old Oscar.

There are quite a few Oscars around but I don't regret naming DS Oscar as I think it is the best boys name EVER

CruCru · 04/06/2014 15:12

I LOVE Oscar but it got vetoed by DH as it is his sister's cat's name (I know).

I have heard the name a few times but don't actually know any Oscars (I live in north London, prime Oscar territory I would have thought).

I love that it works in lots of different places. Also, Oskar Schindler was an Oscar (although spelled the German way).

Stokey · 04/06/2014 17:02

I like it too

I only know 2 - one is 10ish and one is 3

I know far more Arlos and Zacks tbh

nasara · 04/06/2014 18:07

I've done a bit more digging and various sites seem to indicate that Oscar will be in the top ten for last year's official statistics from ONS. It's still my favourite name - I just need to figure out how much of a problem its newfound popularity is. It doesn't help that I'm a teacher and I know what it's like for those children who need to differentiate themselves by their last name's initial.

What's caused this sudden rise in popularity?!

OP posts:
5madthings · 04/06/2014 18:37

Really? It peaked about two years ago and has been dropping since then. The hhighest it got one the ons statistics was number 18 for one year and it was out of the top 20 last year I think.

thereinmadnesslies · 04/06/2014 18:38

I have a 5 year old Oscar. There is one other Oscar in his year ground. It's a fab name, even if it is popular at the moment.

ChristopherRobin · 04/06/2014 18:38

I'm a teacher and have only ever taught one. I know another one who is 15 months.

Marnierose · 04/06/2014 19:14

I'm a midwife and I have come across so many baby oscars in the past year. It really does feel like every baby boy is called Oscar recently. Saying that I'm going for a very traditional boys name and not really bothered by popularity. Oscar does seem to be more of a 'trendy' name which might mean it dates badly or maybe it will just become another classic.

nasara · 04/06/2014 20:04

5madthings it was ranked 17th in 2012 and 2013 hasn't been released yet, but so many sites I've delved into have indicated that Oscar was incredibly popular last year and looks likely for the top 10. What Marnierose has said backs that up too. I agree that it could become a faddy name as its popularity has come from nowhere, although it is a great name so it could stay in the top end of the charts.

Especially as we all (dh,dds and myself) have fairly unusual names, it seems odd to choose such a popular name. Boo, I really think it's time to get back to the drawing board...

Marnierose, what have you gone for, if you don't mind sharing?

I don't know any oscars except for DC3 (7months), it was the only boys name we could agree on!

Hibou7688 · 05/06/2014 21:08

I know very few babies, but two of them are oscars, both under 1 year old.

Rox19 · 05/06/2014 23:00

I know loads ( east London)
Every 2nd boy here is oscar
Zach is very popular as well and Jacob. If you see 3 boys under 2 they are usually Oscar Zachary and Jacob :-)

5 Facebook friends from uni have had oscars this year too 2014

Plus have 2 in the extended family.

TheDetective · 05/06/2014 23:15

I have an Oscar. And know one :) both 18 months.

I'm a midwife also. I've known one Oscar in the last 8 months since I've been back from mat leave!

Before I left Jacob was without doubt THE name! Every other baby boy was Jacob. I loved the name, but where I live/work the popularity was ridiculous!

Rox19 how funny! My Oscar is Oscar Zachary! We couldn't decide on a name as our original choice (Elijah) and our back up choices (Dexter, Luca, Jonah, Noah) didn't suit him at all. Oscar was a name I liked but discounted for being too popular. In retrospect I'm happy I went for it, it isn't that popular that I'm concerned about there being more than one in his class! Zachary was the other name we were deciding between that and Oscar. So we used it as a middle name!

And yes, my Oscar is certainly spirited little sod. Hmm

TheElectricMayhem · 05/06/2014 23:23

Out of the 5 baby boys in my 2013 NCT group, 2 were named Oscar.

TheFace · 06/06/2014 09:22

Rox19, thanks for this info. I am in East London as well but don't actually know any children/babies etc as this is my first child. The only ones I know are people from school on FB, and all their boys are called Harry or Alfie.

I posted a thread yesterday about the names Henry and Oscar being too popular, now I know how popular it is local I'll defiantly try and sway DH away from it.
