What name on school name tapes?

Obviously this isn't really a baby name question but it does relate to names and I thought you may have some wise words.
DD starts school in September but, as we're away a lot over the next few months, I want to get everything organised now. She has a classic English name but is known but a common but not necessarily obvious diminutive (for example, called "Margaret" but known as "Daisy"). She knows and can recognise both her names but prefers "Daisy" and, as that is what we call her 80% of the time, that is what most other people (including all of her pre-school friends who will be going to "big" school with her) know her as as it was the name I used when I introduced her to people.
So, what name do I put on the name tape? I was going to have Margaret Surname but will that decrease the chance of items being returned? Yes, her teacher and a couple of other people will know her proper name but I don't think most people will and I'm not sure they will make the connection, especially as "Daisy" is a name in itself.
Any thoughts? If it helps, our surname is unusual so I can pretty much guarantee she will be the only one in the school with that surname.

Thanks

If your surname is unusual just use the surname. My DCs have an unusual surname and their clothes just say "surname" - means I don't have to relabel any hand-me-downs, apart from anything else.

And I love the Margaret/Daisy thing, btw.

Use her known by name

I would also contact the school and make sure they know the name she goes by otherwise when she starts pegs, books and everything else will be labeled up with her formal name

Use her commonly used name - the "Daisy" one.

Agree with 17 too about letting the school know now as they will have already got things ready before she starts, if you want "Daisy" on her peg.

Disagree with hassled about the just using the surname tho - if there are siblings that is - when I'm returning clothes / emptying out the laundry, I have a quick glance at the name label to know which dc's pile to put it on, I'm not faffing about checking the size labels for each item!

M Surname W

then you can fold over one or other end.

This works well if you have 2 children or more and you order 500 sew on labels - one order will last forever.

M Surname D - that should read !!

W is one of my children Grin

Thanks for this. I thought going with the "known by" name was best. The school have asked on the adnissions form for the "known by" name so I think that will be on pegs etc.
There won't be many hand-me-downs as DC2 is a boy.
My mum did the whole fold over one end of the name tape thing with my name surname brother's name. But she never bothered to re-label stuff which was handed down so I always ended up getting his stuff returned to me.

Sorry - paragraphs did appear when I wrote the above but seemed to disappear from the actual post

I've always been known as a shortened version of my name. My mum got name tags with the long version on.

All that happened was that I had years of "Ooh, I didn't know your name was Venetia, Venny*!" and me trying to convince people not to call me fucking Venetia Angry

Go with just the surname, or the name she's actually called.

*Strangely enough, that's not actually my name Hmm
