Lila pronunciation

My DH and I love the name Lila. I love this spelling of it. We are using the pronunciation lie-la. DH thinks people will pronounce it lee-la and that we should use the spelling Lyla. I don't like that spelling at all. I think people will mainly know that it should be Lie-la. What do you think? I don't want her to be having to correct people for her whole life but I really don't want to use lyla...

I would pronounce Lila Lie-Lah - is that the pronunciation you are after? I think it is a lovely name, btw!

Misspilly88 · 29/05/2014 09:52

I know several Lila's and they all pronounce the name like you want yours to be said. I wouldn't even think of saying leela.

I would prrrrrobably pronounce the name Lie-la...

However, if you love the name, and you love your pronunciation, I say just go for it. But just be prepared not to be precious when people mispronounce it.

I speak from experience - DD's name has three pronunciations (think: Bonham-Carter, Christiansen, and a third way), and hers is not the default one!

It's fine, though. :)

FriedaMensch · 29/05/2014 11:40

I would assume it was pronounced Leela.

But there are plenty of names that have more than one pronunciation, it doesn't really matter. My friend is Lisa, most people say it with a zz noise, Leeza, but some say it with a ss noise. I don't think it's ruined her life!

People usually hear your name first, rather than see it written first, so there probably won't be that much correcting going on.

Thanks for the responses. I think we will just go for it! Very excited to have finally found a name we can agree on. Now we just have to find a middle name!

It is DD's middle name after my grandmother. We say Lie la.

GlaikitFizzog · 29/05/2014 17:18

Lie la like lilac

Angelto5 · 29/05/2014 17:28

What a lovely name. I would pronounce it the way u do as well.
Do u have any ideas on the middle name?

NadiaWadia · 29/05/2014 17:33

I think its normally Lie-la. Great name!

beccajoh · 29/05/2014 17:36

Lie-la. I love it too but DH vetoed it :(

Skintightjeans · 29/05/2014 17:50

I have a Lyla.
People either spell it as Lila or call her Layla so you can't win either way!

I would spell it however you want Grin

daisydalrymple · 29/05/2014 17:57

Whenever i used to see kate moss and daughter in a magazine, i was never sure if it was lie-la or li-la (as in li-ttle, li-ly etc.) I think lie-la is really lovely! Any thoughts on middle name?

Viatrix · 29/05/2014 18:38

I like Lila a lot. Lie-la is how I say it. I'm not a fan of the Lyla spelling.

meditrina · 29/05/2014 18:41

Lie-la (like the chocolate bar)

MrsLilac · 30/05/2014 18:13

Well my OH want to middle name to be after a member of the family. He thinks we should go for Josephine after his sister, Elizabeth after my nana or caroline after me. I don't love any of these to be honest, especially giving her my name! Seems a little self indulgent lol. Don't love the other two ideas either. I'm not too bothered as I don't think middle names are that important but no one in my family, including grand parents, parents cousins etc have middle names for some reason!

So it could be

Lila Elizabeth
Lila Josephine
Lila Caroline

Or soe thing else you lovely ladies think of ;)

Josephine or Caroline work better than Elizabeth, IMO, and then you won't have the 'a' sound at the end of Lila running into another vowel, the 'e' of Elizabeth. It could end up sounding like Lila Relizabeth, IYKWIM. Josephine and Caroline are both nice, why can't she have your name as a middle name, as traditionally boys were named after their fathers and no one thought it self-indulgent just normal?

PiratePanda · 30/05/2014 18:37

Leela if you're pronouncing it the Indian way. Lie-la as in short for Delilah. It can legitimately be pronounced both ways, so you're going to have to get used to telling everyone endlessly .

I would pronounce

Lila > lee-la

Lyla > lie-la

JodieGarberJacob · 30/05/2014 22:54

My friend Lila's name rhymes with killer. Just adding to the mix!

nooka · 31/05/2014 06:19

I have a small cousin Lila, pronounced Lie-la. I think all those middle names work, two syllables three syllables has a nice rhythm.I like the sound of Josephine best, but my dd is named after grandmothers and really likes the link to the past so that's nice too. I wouldn't like my name in my children's names (great name, but it's mine all mine Grin)
