Do you have any European connections? If so I think Anya is nicest from the girls names along with Sophie and Phoebe as classic English names (even though the origin is Greek!) I think Ingrid and Etta sound to harsh too my ears and Anouk reminds me of a little eskimo (but cute if you're Icelandic maybe!)

Boys names Alexander is my fave but Lachlan and Laurie are nice too, just not to my taste. Gilbert has unfortunate connotations in my mind as my granddad used to call bogies Gilberts! And I'm afraid I just really don't like Huw! Not my baby though Smile

Oh my goodness as a total grammar buff I can't believe I typed too and to the wrong way round up there!! Cringe.

Stokey · 28/05/2014 12:03

On your girls list I think Sophie & Phoebe don't really match the tone of the rest of your more unusual names, as they are both very popular.

I really like the others, particularly Etta which is more unusual rift on the Ella/Eva trend.

I'm not a fan of Lachlan having lived in Australia where they are a dime a dozen. Think Laurie is my favourite of your boys names.

Is there a slight Welsh theme in the boys names but not in the girls?
I quite like Sian and Anwen for Welsh girls.

commsgirl · 28/05/2014 12:28

I love all your girls names, especially Anouk and Phoebe.

I like Alexander and Laurie from your boys list. Laurence nn Laurie was on my boys list for DD.

devoncreamtea · 28/05/2014 12:41

Thank you, all! yes some Northern European connections (Norway and Germany) - Anouk is French though, means 'little Anne'. I love the name Anna, but it is my dd's middle name.

Anwen is lovely too, will add! Sian I love but might be annoying explaining how it's said.

Choccyhobnob - don't worry, I went through a terrible phase of getting my their/there's the wrong way round - cringe!!

My other children are called: Meg, Bess, Emma and Rafe - probably should have posted that originally! oops. I thought all above names fitted fairly well, but I am struggling a bit to find anything I like a lot....

Thanks for your replies!

You have excellent taste - my lists for the DC were almost identical Grin

I like all your names but love Laurie for a boy and either Anouk or Etta from your girls list.

devoncreamtea · 28/05/2014 12:45

Thanks!! There's something about Anouk that I just love, think it's the way it looks. Any suggestions welcome - my dh is great fan of vetoing, he seems to think that is the only contribution necessary to the name debate!! (nightmare...)

Loving Etta!

Also how about Sadie? I think Meg, Bess, Emma and Sadie sounds lovely ;D

Out of your boys names I prefer Laurie.

Laurie and Rafe ;)

devoncreamtea · 28/05/2014 15:15

OOh good thought - I'll add it! I like Laurie best too atm. Thanks!

I like your names too! My favourites are Etta, Anya and Sophie. Not keen on phoebe. For a boy Alexander (my fave boy's name) or laurie. Like Lachlan too. Think laurie goes best with your other names.

MrsRuffdiamond · 28/05/2014 22:34

How about Mabel?

This is beginning to sound plaintive, as I suggest it on every name thread, but I do love the name!

devoncreamtea · 29/05/2014 08:26

Hee Hee Mrs I do that with Rafe!!!

I like Mabel but not enough to choose it. Keep going though, one day someone will LOVE it and your work will be done...!!

What I like about Mabel is that its root is the French "Ma belle" or "my beautiful (one)" which is so nice. But sadly (as far as I'm concerned) the English pronunciation "May-bull" just isn't very attractive.

SquallyShowers · 29/05/2014 08:50

Love Etta and Anya, Laurie and Gilbert.
