Sibling for Arabella

Posted a couple of months ago about my obsession with names ending in "ella" and the general consensus was that another name ending in "ella" would be way too samey with Arabella. I still keep returning to the name Mariella, and have just seen it mentioned on another thread. Please let me know if I need to drop the obsession.

Other (non samey) names we are considering are Melissa ( too dated?), Sophia (popular I know, but we both love) and Lavinia (I will need to work on DH with this). What do you think?

Sorry to be so blunt but you can't have two names both ending in Ella.

At an absoloute push, it could be a MN, but you need to get past the -ella ness.

I think Arabella and Mariella together are fine. At the most, people are going to think oh, they must have liked -ella names and then go on with their day. If you love them and it sounds like you do then why shouldn't you have them? I love my children's names and get pleasure every time I say them. It would be a shame to lose that if nothing comes close to Mariella for you.

Buzimomma · 26/05/2014 12:14

No, please be blunt - it's what I need to hear. I had put the name Mariella out of my mind, but seeing it on another thread reminded me of just how much I like it!

Can't you use Elle ending instead. So:

Arabella and Marielle

Or

Arabella and Mirelle ( this sounds better IMO)
Arabella and Marina

Fizzyplonk · 26/05/2014 12:34

Think you could get away with it. Like Sophia too.

How about:-
Cicely
Camilla
Christabel/ Mirabel maybe similar too?
Miranda
Vivienne
Rosaline

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 26/05/2014 23:09

Melissa is lovely, goes better with Arabella and isn't dated at all - just little used and unusual.

Sundaedelight · 27/05/2014 09:19

Arabella and Araminta

Arabella and Aminta

Arabella and Olivia

Arabella and Rosalind

Sundaedelight · 27/05/2014 09:20

Arabella and Marina

EverythingCounts · 27/05/2014 09:32

Susannah

definitely not Arabella and Mariella. They just sound too similar.

Linguaphile · 27/05/2014 09:42

I would move away from any -ella ending as your set will sound awfully sing-songy otherwise! An -elle ending scrapes by as passable, I think, as another poster suggested. That will give some variance and won't sound too samey. I like the suggestion of Mirelle as an alternative to Mariella. What about:

Evangeline
Genevieve
Seraphine
Rosalind
Vespertine
Juliet
Claudia

Arabella was on our list, as was Raphaela. Double 'bella' endings to me would be harder to swallow than double ellas. Mariella and Arabella have such vastly different nn possibilities, and also, for the bulk of their lives, sisters would not be living in the same home, nor being introduced together. They'll be separate, with names that are meaningful to their parents and to them. As someone whose name was a total afterthought, I would think that should weigh more heavily than similar endings.

Sleepyfergus · 28/05/2014 04:40

Well if you really like the together then do it. It's hardly a crime!

Personally, I think they're too similar and when you're calling both their names out across a play park, it might sound a bit sing-songy iykwim.

Lumineer · 28/05/2014 04:50

Mariana?

I know two Arabellas whose sisters are Camille and Amelia.

Lumineer · 28/05/2014 04:50

Respective sisters, of course.

Incapinka · 28/05/2014 04:59

How about Marietta?

burgatroyd · 28/05/2014 10:13

Mariella is fab and goes well with Arabella. There is nothing wrong with this subset at all, IMO. Go for name you love.

curiousgeorgie · 28/05/2014 10:17

I think it's fine... They sound great together!

burgatroyd · 28/05/2014 10:34

Andi would love to hear those names called across a playground.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 28/05/2014 11:59

Mariella is lovely but personally I wouldn't pair it with another -ella name.

Sophie or something unusual like Venetia?

neverenoughwine · 28/05/2014 15:19

How about Marianna??

Arabella and Marianna or Marianne?

Arabella and Claudia?

Arabella and Francesca?

thesaurusgirl · 28/05/2014 16:13

Arabella and Amelia

Arabella and Lucinda

Arabella and Leonora

Arabella and Olivia

Arabella and Rosanna

Arabella and Susannah

Arabella and Harriet

Arabella and Octavia
