Phoebe or Isobel?

Isobel is my grandmother's name and I just love the name Phoebe so I really can't decide between these names.

There are no other girls names that I like as much (don't know if I'm having a girl or boy but am sorted for a boys name!)

The only thing putting me off phoebe is that a colleague has a dd called phoebe - do you think she would be cross if I used it?

They're both lovely names, and there's extra meaning if it was your gran's name.

Could you use both & perhaps have one as a middle name eg Phoebe Isobel Surname?

Am sure your colleague will be fine. I have two colleagues who are friends & both called their boys the same name. It wasn't an issue - in fact the both knew it was going to be "their" boys name if needed.

Don't worry about the colleague! I worked with three women who all had boys with the same name & none were affected by it. Isobel is your gran's name & she would be thrilled if you picked it. My DD's middle name is the same as my grandmother first name & I would like to think she is looking down proudly at her first great grandchild & happy I gave her such a lovely name.

Both Isobel & Phoebe are pretty names which may not my cup of tea but they are yours.

Phoebe Isobel Grey

Before I read your post I thought and preferred phoebe. Unless you socialise with your work colleague and the girls are likely to spend a lot (not just once or twice a year) of time together then it shouldn't be a problem. And personally I would be flattered rather than cross with you in such a scenario.
I like honouring family through middle names so would be happy to go phoebe isobel. My DD's middle name is a much loved and now departed auntie's name.

Love Isobel. Not fond of Phoebe.

I had a similar dilemma and in the end used my grandmother's name as middle name and the other name I liked as first name. I like that it is 'her' name with a nod to my lovely Gran. Personally I prefer Phoebe but only because I prefer the other spelling of Isobel. They are both lovely names and go well together!

ratqueen · 26/05/2014 11:24

Ps don't worry about what other people have called their children!

wrapsuperstar · 26/05/2014 11:58

Both lovely but Isobel is much more popular if that sort of thing makes a difference to you. You've chosen my favourite spelling though -- so much nicer than Isabelle etc!

I like Isobel but not keen on Phoebe at all, but if you love it I think you should use it regardless of your colleague.

I definitely prefer Isobel, I'm not a fan of Phoebe.
