Boy names that work well in English, French and Greek

DP is Greek/German, I am Greek, we live in France, but had previously spent two decades in the UK. I have an unpronounceable ancient Greek name that I have to spell 10 times a day, so DD is called Lily - couldn't be simpler, couldn't be better for us!

DC2 is a boy and we need a similarly easy to pronounce and spell name. Christopher, Nicholas and Alexander are all out as we have close family members with these names. Max is the top contender at the moment, but can you think of any other options in case the baby doesn't feel like a Max when he is born?

George?

Constantine
Phillip
Gregory

Booboostoo · 23/05/2014 06:48

I think Phillip is a firm second favourite at the moment! Some of the others I like a lot but they are pronounced differently in Greek, e.g. Giorgos and George. Sebastian is a gorgeous name, but the Greek version Sevastianos is a bit old fashioned.

Does Hector work in French?

mrsnec · 23/05/2014 15:10

Marking my place as I have the same requirements although the English and greek aspect is more important for me.

I'm still leaning towards Gregory but I don't know if that'd work in French.

Dominic is another one but there's a famous one with our surname.

For me I was thinking not too biblical but I'd them to celebrate their saints day at school and also 'j' names are out as I don't like the way the sound is written in greek.so you could look at saints for inspiration.

And I know it's germanic but I like Hugo too. Maybe it's just that I'm looking for European names in general.

I also think George is the ultimate really but I can't use it.

A Greek friend has a son called Markos but known as Marcus at school/with friends.

Booboostoo · 23/05/2014 16:58

Hector comes out pronounced differently: Ektoras is Greek, 'Ector in French, Hector in English

Markos is another great one thanks!

Darios is very Persian not used in modern Greek to my knowledge, Theodoros and Fretherikos a bit old fashioned in Greek. Some of the others are lovely but turn out too different Michalis/Michael

mrsnec will your DC have a British passport? I think that works a lot better than a Greek version translating to English. DD's "Lily Charlotte" at one point had to be written "Lily Harlot" to get translated into "Lily Charlot" and that was the best we could get! Had to go through back channels to get the Charlotte bit approved! Jason is a nice J name but it would be Iasonas in Greek (also lovely, but Tsason (taf zita at the start) is a bit odd in Greek).

Does Evan work in Greek?

NigellasDealer · 23/05/2014 18:26

I do not think there is a v as such in the Greek alphabet

Pebbles0934 · 23/05/2014 18:52

Evan is a Welsh masculine given name derived from "lefen", a Welsh form for the name John. In other languages it could be compared to "Ivan", "Ian", and "Juan"; the name John is derived from the ancient Hebrew name ?????????? Y?hô??n?n, which means "YHWH Is Gracious". Evan is also a Celtic name meaning "young warrior". It can also be the shortened version of the Greek name Evangelos.

Booboostoo · 23/05/2014 19:10

The Greek B (vita) is pronounced like the English V.

Artandco how lovely! That's the first Darius I've come across in Greece! Then again I am a 'Nafsika' which is pretty rare even in Greece and a nightmare everywhere else!
