Totally hypothetical but would it be weird to call our child Charis (adore, adore, adore!) if my name is Harriet and DH's name is Chris?? Sounds a bit to similar to Chris right? :-/

even though they are in fact called Hàris
yes but the Greek X as math said does not sound like English H it is more of a soft throaty CH

It's odd how the position has changed, it used to be almost expected to be called after a parent.

I am not the pfb but am called after DM. Not quite the same name, a prettier ( imv) variant. I love it and like being called after her. No-one has ever suggested it's odd.

So my view is go ahead with whatever you want, wherever.

Well, it's my name and rightly or wrongly we say sssssssharis

Ssssharis

I'm a Carys and 70% of people I come across can't pronounce/spell my name.

I think calling your DD Charis as a middle name might be better with your DH's name being Chris.

Charis is a lovely name, but Charis and Chris are too similar. Spoken fast they'd sound exactly the same as well.

If you really must use it, make absolutely sure she has a different middle initial to her dad.

I thought immediately of hash, sorry.

KoalaDownUnder · 28/05/2014 07:43

I think Carys is beautiful, and she'll have to put up with much less mispronunciation than if you go with Charis.

I know a couple of girls called Carys with not a drop of Welsh blood in them; never thought anything of it!

devoncreamtea · 28/05/2014 11:36

I think it's fine - doesn't sound like either of your names to my ears.

I like the Carys spelling best
