Spelling question - Calista or Callista

GoldenDaffodil · 17/05/2014 07:40

I appreciate it's a bit of a marmite name but DH and I have settled on Calista for our DD2. The only thing we disagree on is the spelling, I think it should have one 'l' and he thinks it should have two. I would appreciate your opinions please. Thanks

I'm going to say 2. Particularly if you think you're likely to abbreviate to Callie.

I'd pronounce it with emphasis on the 'iss' sound, is that right? I remember a thread here about the mispronunciation of Athena so am doubting myself.

lucidlady · 17/05/2014 07:46

I prefer it with one l.

GoldenDaffodil · 17/05/2014 07:52

We will be pronouncing it kah-lis-ta. I think the most likely nn is Callie (which I love) so I guess that's the most compelling reason for a double l.

KAH-list-a or kah-LIST-a?

I love love love Callie

GoldenDaffodil · 17/05/2014 08:19

Kah-list-a.

I think Callie is a fab abbreviation and a great alternative for DD if she prefers it.

one l I think. Also love callie

UriGeller · 17/05/2014 08:24

CA-lista for me, rather than ca-LISTa I don't think the spelling is important.

Its a gorgeous name, I know a grown up Calista (rhymes with Alistair) and she's very very cool.

peppinagiro · 17/05/2014 08:31

It should have one l. I've never seen it with two - I'd think it was a misspelling if I saw it.

ImperfectTense · 17/05/2014 08:32

I know one with 2 "ll" - I think her father is a classics professor.

GoldenDaffodil · 17/05/2014 08:53

It's the Latin version of the Greek name Callisto. We've been doing a lot of research and the double l does seem to be a legitimate spelling but the single l version is more popular.

two L's for me too.

DogCalledRudis · 17/05/2014 12:25

I'd say Calixta

florascotia · 17/05/2014 12:44

I think you can choose, depending on whether you want to follow Latin or more recent Spanish.

The ancient Greek name had LL. It began with a K and ended with an O.
In English - eg when re-telling the myth about Callisto (she was changed into a bear and became a constellation), it is usually spelled Callisto.

As you say, the Latin version of the ancient Greek was Callistus for a boy and Callista for a girl.
Modern Spanish, which developed from Latin, still ends with an A (for a girl) but (I believe) has a single L.

In terms of popularity, how did actress Calista Flockhart spell her name? With one L, I think?

bouncingbelle · 17/05/2014 19:02

Callista. Both this name and Callie are gorgeous!!

GoldenDaffodil · 17/05/2014 21:20

Calista Flockhart spells it with one l flora and thanks for the positivity bouncing.

Calista is lovely.

I much prefer it spelled with one 'l'. It looks more streamlined and classy.

Viatrix · 19/05/2014 17:47

Callista, it looks friendler than Calista for some reason!

MoominAndMiniMoom · 20/05/2014 09:15

I think it looks better with one 'l'.

Callie's a gorgeous abbreviation (but I'm biased because I have one Grin not short for Calista though)

Choccyhobnob · 20/05/2014 10:18

Definitely Calista. Looks classier IMHO. Love the nickname Callie Smile
