Is it inevitable that Elodie will become Ellie?

I really like Elodie but am worried about it getting shortened to Ellie - which I don't like. Is this inevitable? Do you know any Elodies that have managed to stay as Elodie as they get older?

I knew an Elodie at school. She was always Elodie and I never heard anyone shorten it.

spideysenses · 15/05/2014 13:18

A girl at play group is called eloedi not heard it shortened but it did take me a while to figure out she wasn't called melody, oops not sure if this helps at all...

MargeryDaw · 15/05/2014 14:27

Thank you, that's reassuring. I had thought about people mixing it up with Melody but that doesn't bother me as much for some reason!

Nope, DD is Elodie, and nobody has ever shortened it. I hate Ellie too. I think with Elodie, the end of the name is stronger than the beginning if you see what I mean, so people tend to play around with the 'dee' noise if they want to shorten it. Ellie doesn't seem to be a natural leap. I've only had one person ask if she was ever Ellie, and had Ella a couple of times on the phone just when people have misheard her name.

peppinagiro · 15/05/2014 16:12

Nobody has called her Melody either!

Salazar · 15/05/2014 16:16

The Elodie I know uses either Elle or Elo (El-loh).

Never heard her referred to as Ellie.

Chocolateporridge · 15/05/2014 17:06

My dd is Elodie and none of our friends call her Ellie...but we do! Not all the time, but quite often. Her friends at nursery quite often call her Melody because of the Cbeebies show Smile

alita7 · 15/05/2014 17:12

I've only know one Elodie who was refered to by her full name.

stella69x · 15/05/2014 17:17

I would think Dee or Deedee as a nickname or Elodie.

Delphiniumsblue · 15/05/2014 17:28

It depends entirely on your DDs preference and if she prefers Ellie, she will be Ellie and if she wants Elodie that is what she will be. She might like Dee. It is outside your control once she is about 5 yrs. something to bear in mind when choosing.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 15/05/2014 17:33

Sorry - the one I know is always Ellie!

Thing is, unlikely or not, if you really HATE a short form (or possible short form) then maybe go for another name. Because if they like it, they'll use it, and there will be nothing you can do.

So if you really really HATE Ellie...

MargeryDaw · 15/05/2014 19:34

I don't really really hate Ellie, would just never actively choose it. Hmmmm I think we need to think some more on it. Thanks for all your replies

Of rather be Electra then elodie

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/05/2014 23:40

She'd be Ello if anything.

I know an Elinor who goes by Ello.

princessdave · 16/05/2014 11:55

DD is Elodie (age 2.5) and no one has ever shorted it to Ellie ever (maybe they all know I don't like it although I've never said it out loud Grin). We refer to her as E via text/email but at home she is Elodie. If it gets shortened when she goes to school then so be it but even now she is quite certain that "my name is Elodie" if you call her say, pudding, so maybe she'll insist on it through life!

If you hate Ellie but like Elodie maybe use DeeDee or Dee instead if people ask do you use a NN? Elodie is already so short that no one has asked us if we use a NN to be honest....

tammytoby · 16/05/2014 14:56

Elodie is lovely and I don't think it is inevitable that her friend call her Ellie (which I agree isn't nice).
