Help! I've just found out that my baby is a boy and I can't find a boys name I really love. If I tell you the types of names I quite like, I'm hoping someone can suggest other names I might like, or tell me what you think of my list so far. If it's any help, I would have chosen Rosa for a girl.

My current favourite is Thomas (Tom) but there seem to be loads of them about which might get a bit annoying.

I'm also considering:
Benjamin (Ben)
Adam
Joseph

Others I liked but discounted are:
Noah (doesn't work with surname)
Isaac (doesn't work with surname)
Sam (too similar to DH's name)
Seth (the th sound is a bit tricky for me to pronounce!)
Alex (not sure about it for some reason)

I like all the Thomas the tank engine type names! Great suggestions, I really like Jacob, Oliver, Paul, Charlie, George, Toby and Daniel but they are all out as they are the names of very close family/friends. I like Gregory but it rhymes too much with our surname. Not so keen on names like Quentin, Sebastian, Theodore, Gabriel (no offence to anyone with these names), I prefer plainer names - I want something that suits a cute little boy, and will also suit a grown up whether he's a builder or a lawyer.

Nice to hear that some people don't think Thomas is too common. There are at least 3 boys called Tom/Thom/Thomas in DD's nursery so I think that combined with the fact it's in the top 10 most popular names made me think there would be loads of them everywhere.

I do like Thomas/Joseph/Ben and quite like some of the others but nothing feels perfect. I just knew that Rosa was the right name if we had a girl, and I felt the same about DD's name.

Smoke & Fluff, I think there were a Bill & Ben in Thomas too - yellow engines?

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 15/05/2014 15:05

\link{http://ttte.wikia.com/wiki/Bill_and_Ben\here they are} - naughty tank engines Grin

Donald & Douglas were big black engines & very sensible (& Scottish!) iirc

I have a Tom, full name Thomas, and he's the only one in his grade. So, the answer is if you find it too popular, move to the US!!

Bigbird01 · 15/05/2014 15:16

My son is a Thomas. Yes, there are a lot if them about, but you really don't notice it. Did you know Thomas is from the Arabic for twin? That's why we used it - it was high on our list anyway, but then found out that and (as he is a twin) it was a must!

smokeandfluff · 15/05/2014 19:59

I need to read up on my Thomas The tank engine!

Justin
Roland
Raymond
Richard

If you love Thomas, just go with it!

NearTheWindymill · 15/05/2014 21:22

Oh that went a bit wrong. There's everything in there but so are Bill and Ben.

Oh and just a thought - how about "Ringo". His real name was Richard; just looked him up.

PetaPipa · 16/05/2014 06:02

How about Jonas? Combines parts of Joseph, Ben and Thomas!

smokeandfluff · 16/05/2014 09:11

Or jonah, hugo

SquirrelledAway · 16/05/2014 13:24

Even if there is more than one Thomas or Tom in a class, does it really matter in the scheme of things? Classes tend to get mixed around every year, and the kids sort themselves out into Thoms, Toms, Thomases, Tommys, Tom Bs etc.

If you love Thomas as a name, just go for it.

HandragsNGladbags · 16/05/2014 13:28

Robert? Andrew is lovely and not often heard these days?

Badvoc · 16/05/2014 13:33

I Have a tom and and felt as you do, but he is now nearly 11 and yet he has never been in a class with another ;)

devoncreamtea · 16/05/2014 14:53

Thomas is lovely, call him Tom - go on - it's popular cos it's great!

fantastickfox · 16/05/2014 15:00

Reuben - I know a Rosa and Reuben.

sonniebonnie · 16/05/2014 15:03

Love Rosa as a girls name.

Tom is a little dull in comparison. I like

Isaac
Reuben
Quentin
Jacob
Nicholas

Artandco · 16/05/2014 15:26

Max
Aiden
Oliver
Arthur
Otto
Joel

stinkypants · 16/05/2014 18:57

Thomas the tank engine has bert and arry ..... hmm not sure about those! !
Agree thomas a classic and lovely choice.
Also like toby.

hefner · 19/05/2014 10:39

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Sonnie I don't mind dull! Handrags Robert and Andrew are the right type of classic name but I don't love them. Peta I really like how Jonas sounds but it reminds me of the Jonas brothers! Fox Reuben is lovely but rhymes too much with my surname. Sonnie and Art I like your suggestions (except Quentin and Otto), but they are all close family names or don't go with my surname.

Badvoc and Devon I do love Tom, I started the thread looking for alternatives but I've found myself comparing everything to Thomas so that's clearly my favourite! Squirelled I agree it doesn't really matter if there are others with the same name, I just wasn't sure if it would be annoying for him, as my name is fairly unusual so I never had anyone else with the same name. I guess I'm comparing it to my childhood where there were several Sarahs and Lauras in each class, at least Tom/Thomas/Tommy is a bit easier to differentiate!
