Just a bit worried about first one in case kids add a 'k' on his schoolbag at secondary school!!
Not keen on E as already have one .

Ieuan?

It's Welsh.

peppinagiro · 10/05/2014 08:28

I don't like either. But definitely not Iwan. The kids will definitely add a k.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/05/2014 08:30

I've a Ieuan.

Christelle2207 · 10/05/2014 08:40

Ioan was on our list (welsh) but I think some find it awkward to say

PacificDogwood · 10/05/2014 08:43

How are you intending to pronounce it? Like 'Ian'?

How about Iain - 'Ian' or Ioan - 'Yohan' (Welsh)?
Ioan was on our list as well - I don't find it hard to say.

PacificDogwood · 10/05/2014 08:44

Oh, and if you like Iwan then why not go for Ivan?

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 10/05/2014 08:57

Or Ewan? Also Welsh, but pronounced the same way as I would pronounce Iwan (almost)

stinkypants · 10/05/2014 09:00

Intending as Ewan. Wikipedia lists iuan as a version but not seen it anywhere else. I know a ioan pronounced yowan. Hadn't seen ieuan, is that also pronounced ewan? Happy with Welsh connections. Just trying to avoid E.
Not so keen on Ivan.
Quite like rhys but some in family can't pronounce R very well!
Also like Adam but have a very boring surname and want something slightly different.

Wouldn't realise Ewan was spelt like that....

If I liked Ewan I'd just spell it Ewan.

Bunbaker · 10/05/2014 09:13

What about Owen? I think people will struggle with the pronunciation and spelling of your first choices.

peppinagiro · 10/05/2014 09:19

Ieuan is pronounced Y-eye-an (to rhyme with Ryan) if that makes sense.

Bonsoir · 10/05/2014 09:29

Euan

Artandco · 10/05/2014 09:35

Euan - any other way I would get confused how to pronounce

Or
Ivo
Owen
Will
Arden

CelticPromise · 10/05/2014 09:41

If you want the name Ewan without an E and with Welsh connections it's Iwan. I've never heard of Iuan and it wouldn't make sense with Welsh pronunciation.

Cezella · 10/05/2014 12:41

I know LOADS of Iwans OP- grew up in and live in North West Wales, I've never seen any of them struggling because someone's added a K to their name, it's a standard welsh name!

Iuan makes no sense to me as a Welsh name- Ioan is "yo-ann" and Ieuan is "yey-ann" (kinda- very hard to write welsh names in phonetic English!)

Cezella · 10/05/2014 12:42

And Ieuan does definitely NOT rhyme with Ryan in any way shape or form!!

QuickQuickSloe · 10/05/2014 12:50

It does in South Wales, I know four Ieuans that rhyme with Ryan!

peppinagiro · 10/05/2014 14:20

Yep, I'm from south Wales. It always rhymes with Ryan down there, whenever I've heard it. I have occasionally heard it the yey-an way on S4C though probably from Gogs ;)

Christelle2207 · 10/05/2014 14:27

North walian welsh speaker here. Ieuan very hard for a non-native but really cant see how it would rhyme with ryan.

Christelle2207 · 10/05/2014 14:29

Yey-an is very close.

Never come across Iuan or Ewan.
Iwan/Ieuan/Ioan all welsh
Euan English

mcdog · 10/05/2014 14:30

How about Eoghan?

stinkypants · 10/05/2014 18:41

I'm thinking Iwan, thanks for all the responses. Definitely ruled out iuan. On re-reading Wikipedia I think it's a Cornish version? ! Just got to think of one for his twin now!

If of interest to anyone!

Ok, I apologise- I'm not in South Wales! For speakers of the Welsh language though, phonetically that combination of letter sounds don't rhyme with Ryan- but I suppose that explains why Aneurin gets Nye in South Wales too!
