Lisabeth?

I've posted many many threads discussing how I can have the nickname Libby without using Elizabeth as my dsds names are too similar - can't have names with el in.

I'm not keen on Lisbeth or liberty and I don't want to give a nickname without a 'full name'. I thought I liked Olivia (livvy Is similar so was hoping to stretch to libby as me and dp would never call her anything but libby so it shouldn't matter) but there are so many Olivias and the more I think about it the less I like it so not a good idea really.

So is Lisabeth a name? If not then do you think it sounds ok to use? I think I've exhausted all other options...

Also I don't like Liberty, so options are:

  • Lisabeth if dp will forget his friends Lizbeth
  • Elizabeth if I can make sure she's always Libby so we don't have the el problem
  • Olivia, but I don't think I will like it at all soon
  • Libby by itself but my Mum would be very unimpressed as she was when I suggested this and I would feel like she didn't have a complete name...
  • Something entirely different- hard as dp has vetoed most names I like... and while I really like Beatrice, I don't think I'd want to use it as a full name on a daily basis as it's a bit posh but I'm not a massive fan of Bea and Trixie puts me in mind of a stubborn spoilt ginger for some reason- probably from some book I read as a child or something :P

Has anyone used a name they're not 100% about and then been ok with it and come to love it when it became a part of their child?

By the way, my DD name is your favourite name...

squoosh · 07/05/2014 14:48

Is your partner suggesting names as well as vetoing?

Also, in the nicest possible way, what you name your child has nothing to do with your mother.

Clint88 · 07/05/2014 14:54

'Stubborn spoilt ginger'?

Nice. What if your baby is 'a ginger', will you want to send it back?

I don't like Libby (sounds like dribble) at all but it's a perfectly sensible name all on its own. Tell your mother to GTF, she got to name her own kids now it's your turn.

BigfootFiles · 07/05/2014 14:59

Just to say, Libi is a girl's name from Hebrew, meaning heart. So your mum's wrong that's it's not a complete name.

"Libe" (lee-buh) is a Yiddish name, from the German "liebe" meaning "to love". I prefer the Liebe spelling myself, less chance of being pronounced to rhyme with vibe.

alita7 · 07/05/2014 15:05

Clint I meant no offence to gingers- my hair is currently rather ginger due to trying to strip red hair dye out of it, and most of my mums family is ginger- BUT when I think Trixie I see a cartoon drawing of a little girl in an old book (like say from when my 70 year old Nan was little so it could be a memory from one of her old books) with cropped ginger hair, folding her arms, turning away and pouting.

Dp has suggested some names- but I've suggested the bulk of them.

Thank you big foot- I feel better about the prospect of Libby on its own now as it has a genuine claim to being a full name!

Libby is a really lovely and perfectly acceptable "full" name - Fwiw, you only have to type something like "Libby Lawyer" in a google search to see that there are many Libbys who have "passed the High Court Judge test" - an obsession here on mumsnet. If Libby is the name you love, you should go for it!

Swisskissingisbetterthenfrench · 07/05/2014 18:22

Elspeth?

Bunbaker · 07/05/2014 18:28

I'm sorry, but I don't "get" the MN obsession with shortened names/nicknames. Why not find a full name that you like and then the child can choose what he/she wants to call himself/herself?

Personally I don't like Libby, but do like Elizabeth (but I am biased)

ZingWatermelon · 07/05/2014 18:31

just choose Libby ffs!

come on, it's your baby, your mum's opinion really shouldn't matter that much.
It's your responsibility.

imagine your DD asking in a few years time why you chose her name.
what will you say?
do you really want to tell her "it was to keep grandma happy?!"
sorry, but that's crap.

your choice (and dad's). don't let your mum bully you into another name.

Bunbaker · 07/05/2014 18:34

"imagine your DD asking in a few years time why you chose her name.

I don't like Elizabeth, but I liked Libby.

alita7 · 07/05/2014 18:38

I think I'm going to tell dp that Libby itself is going on the list even if he does change his mind- as you can probably all tell from all the agro this name is very important to me :P

Swiss Elspeth is a lovely name but has 'el' at the start which is the only problem with Elizabeth.

Bun baker I'm not sure what you're saying- if you mean that you don't understand why everyone says it's ok to go for a shortened name and why don't I go for Libby by itself- then I see what you mean as I was feeling that a longer version would be better so they had more choice if they wanted it but that as Libby is the name I love, that's what I would be calling them all the time. But people have kindly showed me that Libby does actually have it's own origins and is a name in it's own right- or at least variant spellings are. If you are wondering why I want to call my child by a shortened version or a nickname, then why??? My like of Libby came first, then as Elizabeth is a family name and Libby is a nickname from Elizabeth, it made sense to use that, but now I can't so I've been rethinking things- I'm not sure what's wrong with happening to really like a name that happens to be nickname...

Bun baker- why would I say that- I've said in previous posts that I like Elizabeth and Lisabeth as names, but I Love Libby.

My reply (if I were to go with Elizabeth anyway) would be:

"I really loved your name Libby (what she'd be called most of the time unless she asked to be called something else) and it was short for Elizabeth which I also liked a lot, as well as it being my mums middle name, so I chose to call you Elizabeth with Libby as a nickname." I would also tell the story about how it is what I said I would call my brother when I was 6 as I was told I could name him if he was a girl because my parents couldn't agree.

If I just called her Libby my reply would be:

"Because I loved the name Libby, and I thought about using Elizabeth with Libby as a nickname but it was too similar to your older sisters names and I found out that Libby is a name by itself too, so that's what I called you..."

How about Belinda, with Libby as a nickname? Belle/bella means beautiful in French/Italian and linda means beautiful in Spanish.

devoncreamtea · 13/05/2014 22:15

Don't worry about job interviews etc - the world just isn't like that anymore, and will be less so in 20 yrs for sure.

Call her what you love. Libby is a strong, feminine name - not like shazza or pops or something else nick namey (terrible examples sorry!!) - it's perfect as is - go for it!

florascotia · 14/05/2014 08:41

OP - I just wonder whether you are perhaps worring a bit too much about Elizabeth being too similar to your other daughter's name beginning with 'El'.
Although they may start off with the same letters, do these letters actually sound the same?

The sound at the beginning of Elizabeth is 'EH' (Eh-liz-eh-beth) or, in some accents, 'UH' (UH-liz-uh-beth) or 'EE' (EE-liz-ah-beth)

The sound at the beginning of most other names beginning with El is different, for example: Eleanor = ELL-in-or, Elvira = ELL-veer-ah, Ellie = ELL-ee, Elodie = ELL-oh-dee, Elspeth = ELL-speth etc, etc.

alita7 · 14/05/2014 09:32

Flora it's the fact that it's two dsds with almost the same name that's the issue, I don't want to add to that :p

Also I've never said it eh lizabeth I don't if I say it 'wrong' but it definitely comes out el izabeth from my mouth ::p

We decided in the end that libby by itself is on the list :)
