People dislike our names we have picked.....

Am not going to put them on here as I got a lot of backlash when I did a few months ago.

Am now 21 weeks and at work during the week a colleague asked what we are planning on naming baby. We haven't found out the gender but have a definate boys name (obviously I know this could change when baby arrives if he's a boy) and we have a couple of girls names.

But when I mentioned the names to a colleague I got a "face" pulled and then "that's really unusual" for the boys name and for the girls names we have "they are all really common".

Similar reaction from my dad and DHs parents too.

Why can't people leave alone and just smile and leave it be :-( it's now making us doubt our choices which makes me sad.....

I like the girls names.

I struggle with Rio for a boy. Despite being all of 25 the first thing I think of is that Duran Duran song.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/04/2014 21:19

Girls' names are nice. Don't like Rio.

smartypants1000 · 30/04/2014 22:46

I like Rio, actually, although have never met one. Girls' names aren't unusual but so what? It's your baby, if you love them, that's what matters. I've always just said "we're keeping it to ourselves" when asked about names - I hate hearing people's opinions, it somehow spoils it for me even though I don't really care what anyone thinks.

temporarilyjerry · 30/04/2014 22:54

I know a baby Rio. As others have said, it's unusual but not too out there.

I prefer Sophia, but Daisy is fine too.

Megrim · 01/05/2014 17:31

I really don't get all this angst about using names that turn out to be popular that year. If you like it, and your child likes it, and if it suits him/her, then why does it matter?

Both my boys have "popular" names. DS1's name was the 4th most popular in that year, yet we only know one other boy with that name. DS2 had three other boys in his class with that name, but they were all known by variants and nobody has ever commented on it being a common name. I couldn't imagine either of them being called anything else.

Onesleeptillwembley · 01/05/2014 17:36

Your girls names are fine, but honestly? I'd pull my face if one of my family mentioned calling a child 'Rio'. It is really bad. I'm guessing people are trying to tell you because they care, and don't want the baby they will love lumbered with that.

seashellgreen81 · 02/05/2014 16:55

I have also discovered that the names we have selected (we also don't know gender) are real 'marmite' names (either loved or hated). I've found it quite a shock when people are so forthright with their views. This particularly goes for forum users but I don't think you should pay too much heed to that because you don't really know who it is giving their opinion (i.e. might be someone whose opinion on things you wouldn't give credit to in 'normal life.') I guess it could partly be that people think you are asking them for their opinion and if you told them once the baby is born they might be less likely to express that opinion. I like all your name choices. None of them would be my choice but I doubt what i've chosen would be yours! Just choose a name you like best - finding one that everyone likes is an impossible task!

(Btw I know a Rio.Nice lad and not bullied for his name. I'm wondering if you're considering this name because of the world cup in Brazil this year?)

I really like Sophia and Rio.

Less keen on Daisy but it's fine.

Failing to see why these have got such a negative reaction in real life. The girls' names in particular are totally normal and conventionally pretty.

thegambler · 02/05/2014 18:13

The only problem with Daisy is that I have the feeling it is going to be the next "Sophie" or "Lee" from a few years back and be far too popular.

DogCalledRudis · 02/05/2014 18:19

Don't tell your name choices to people, especially relatives. Its a huge mistake.

MrsGiraffe12 · 02/05/2014 18:24

See, I've been worried people would assume me picked Rio because of the World Cup too but we've liked it for years :-)

Urgh, naming a baby is hard x

I know a Rio, he must be 10 or about that anyway.
His name is seen as cool because of Rio Ferdinand.

And nice and short to learn to spell.

I like your girls names too, especially Daisy.

twinjocks · 02/05/2014 23:39

Sophia (and all the variations) is incredibly common here. I work in a school and every class from about age 8 down has at least 3 Sophia/Sofia/Sophie/Sofies - one class has 5 of them. On the other hand, my own teenage DD is Daisy - excellent name imho!!!

Rio - hmmm - bit too footballery for me and also very different in style to your girl names, but if you like it, go for it!

Madamecastafiore · 02/05/2014 23:41

Girls names are nice. Rio is dire. Why would you saddle a little boy with that?

thegambler · 03/05/2014 00:32

Don't be sorry, you've posted what I didn't have the bottle to.

Mrsindecision · 03/05/2014 01:21

Who's posted what you didn't have the bottle to thegambler?

Anyway OP, I definitely think you are better off keeping your shortlisted names to yourself and choosing one both you and your DH love without discussing it with others. Fwiw, I genuinely can't see why your girls' names have received any negativity as they are perfectly lovely names imo. Rio may be a little more unusual when compared to your options for a girl, but it is still perfectly useable.

thegambler · 03/05/2014 01:24

sonlypuppyfat. Forgive me,I'm new here, just a poor defenceless male and am just getting used to how the forum works. (Could've sworn I posted it right after the post I was referring to)

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/05/2014 01:27

Just address the person (everyone seems to bold the name of the poster) whose post you're referring to gambler Smile

thegambler · 03/05/2014 01:29

Thanks for the tip, live and learn eh! I'm surprised there is no quote facility, would make it easier from other forums I've been on.

ThingsThatShine · 03/05/2014 01:43

Rude rude people! Fwiw I like the names

ZingWatermelon · 03/05/2014 03:47

I prefer Sofia/Sophia.

Rio is unusual but fine and not horrible.
in fact I prefer it to River (which is what it means as I'm sure you all know)

so just go for whichever combo you like - and stop telling people in RL what you are planning!

who cares what they think anyway? Wink

GimmeDaBoobehz · 03/05/2014 20:10

I like Rio and Sophia.

It's you that will be calling his/her name across the playground so it's your choice what you choose. Your parents/relatives had a choice what to call their children and that time has passed.

Good luck with your pregnancy :)

Tranquilitybaby · 04/05/2014 08:11

I'd never share name choices with anyone, you open yourself up to differing opinion. Your child, your choice x
