Too boring?

I'm having a baby boy and thinking of calling him Ennis.
I want an interesting name as mine is really boring, and don't know if Ennis is interesting enough. I don't want too weird though.
Second choice is currently Idris.
Any thoughts welcome!

No, not boring at all. Thomas IMO is boring. But these have some character. Prefer Ennis. Sounds like a surname/family name?

sonlypuppyfat · 28/04/2014 17:52

Ennis is nice better than the usual Stanley and Archie jollop.

UriGeller · 28/04/2014 17:52

I don't like it but I don't like those surnamey names (Jessica Ennis) or names like Ellis or Elliott. They just sound a bit weak to me.

Here in Scotland Innes is quite well known, but still outside the top 100:

I think it's really lovely.

Heath Ledger's character in Brokeback Mountain is Ennis. One of my favourite films so a good association for me Smile .

I forgot about Brokeback Mountain. Not seen the film but love the book. Good associations for me too.
Can't call him Innes (which I like - also love the beer!) as I've a niece called Inez.

I've never heard of Ennis as a name, but know the town very well!.

flavourflave · 28/04/2014 20:48

I like Idris

Twooter · 28/04/2014 20:51

Wouldn't it be confusing? How often do you see Inez?

Level75 · 28/04/2014 20:54

Ennis is already a bit close to Inez (who we see every 3-4 weeks) but that's not enough for me not to choose it. It did rule out Innes though.
Inez is pronounced inEZ wheras Ennis is ENnis so they sound a little different - honest!

Would deffo not do Ennis with an Inez in the family, personally. And anyway, imvho, Idris is much nicer. Tbh though, I think both of them are too similar to Inez.

LadyRochford · 28/04/2014 20:59

I quite like it, but Idris is better!

Level75 · 28/04/2014 21:01

Idris was the front runner for a while but then I thought it might get too popular because of Idris Elba.

I vote for Idris

evamummy · 29/04/2014 14:12

I like Ennis - great name, clear pronunciation, underused.

Idris is nice too but the pronunciation may be confusing (EE-dris vs Eye-dris).

Frontdoorstep · 29/04/2014 16:31

Ennis sounds to me like Dennis with the D missing.

SisterChristina · 29/04/2014 17:52

There was a boy named Ennis at school with me. He was nicknamed 'Penis' within hours and it stuck for the next 5 yrs....

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 29/04/2014 18:07

I like it Smile

IHaveSeenMyHat · 29/04/2014 18:14

I'm afraid my first thought was "penis" (due to the spelling) followed by "anus" (because they sound alike). Sorry!

DessieLou · 30/04/2014 21:27

How about Ezra? I love this but dh does not!

aoife24 · 30/04/2014 22:45

It makes me think of a not particularly attractive town in County Clare of the same name.
