Hi name experts :) sadly my Dhs brother died suddenly last week of a massive brain haemorrhage . We have dd3 due in 2 weeks and dh would like to give her a middle name which honours his brother . His brothers name was Ian so not the easiest to come up with a nice female version.
Googling has come up with 2 options both of which I'm not sure how to pronounce and I'm not sure I like
Ianna
Ianthe

Her first name will be Elise and surname is Quinn .

All suggestions gladly accecpted !!!

Iona? Similar sounds and it's a lovely name.
So sorry for your loss.

Did BIL like his name? Is there something he really loved (like, with his mini giving the middle name Cooper?) that might provide some more options?
Did PIL have any ideas what they would've called him if he were a girl? Might be something DH could agree on?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 28/04/2014 18:09

What a lovely gesture.

Scottish I think, Ina, pronounced Ee-nah or Eye-nah.

chickydoo · 28/04/2014 18:12

I second Minnie, a fantastic name.

OneStepCloser · 28/04/2014 18:16

As its a middle name I would honestly just use Ian, probably just me though as my sister and I both have male relative names as middle names and no ones every battered an eyelid to them (not to my face anyway Grin)

ajandjjmum · 28/04/2014 18:22

I love Ianthe.

Sorry for your loss.

WiiUnfit · 28/04/2014 18:53

SunnyInterval, another thought - DP's Aunt died when MiL was expecting him, they echoed her initials when choosing his name in tribute so they both had the same initials. You sound set on Elise but thought I'd mention it just in case it helps at all and I am truly sorry for your loss. Thanks

MrsMaturin · 28/04/2014 18:57

Caroline is the female version of Charles rather than Charlotte.

mysteryfairy · 28/04/2014 18:59

I would go with whatever name close to Ian you like out of the tons of good suggestions here, but then actually have Charlotte as a second middle name as well so the tribute is more explicit.

So sorry for your loss.

FatalCabbage · 28/04/2014 19:09

Ian as initials is clever, yes.

Isadora Annabel Niamh ::swoons::

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 28/04/2014 19:09

As a previous poster has already said, I would actually just go with Ian. It is a MN, not a first name so there will be no confusion over gender.

For me (and I totally accept there is no right or wrong about it, it's totally personal choice), it would be a case of 'use the name or don't' - meaning I would either use Ian or nothing. If it's not the same name, it's not the same name (to me).

That said, Ianna is very pretty.

Sorry for your loss, I am sure whatever you decide will be perfect for your family Flowers.

rockybalboa · 28/04/2014 19:13

My vote is with Ianna.

Surf25 · 28/04/2014 20:06

Ian is the Gaelic version of John, and Shona is the female version of John, so how about Shona? Elise is lovely. Sorry to hear about your loss. BW for the arrival of dd3

ImAThrillseekerBunny · 28/04/2014 20:11

I also thought of initials - Ilsa Amy Niamh Quinn would be nice. But Iona is a lovely name, and sufficiently reminiscent.

spottydolphin · 28/04/2014 20:15

I think the idea of nia or ina is great. Esp like nia

Purplehonesty · 28/04/2014 20:22

I like Ina, Iona or Nia.

BridgeOfWhys · 28/04/2014 20:27

There was an Ianetta pronounced Ian Etta at a soft play once.

BridgeOfWhys · 28/04/2014 20:28

I don't think you could have Minnie with the first name Elise. It's a bit car based as a name.

Tobagostreet · 28/04/2014 20:38

Sorry to hear about your BILThanks

I think Ianna is beautiful, and is an obvious nod to your BIL.

Picking a MN to honour him is such a lovely thing to do.

thegreylady · 28/04/2014 20:40

Rhian has the Ian sound at the end ree-an.

breakfastnotattiffanys · 28/04/2014 20:42

What about Ianne?

whosafraidofnaomiwolf · 28/04/2014 20:45

I'm so sorry for your loss Sunny.

I love Ianna, but to my ear Elise Ianthe Quinn flows much better. Elise Ian Quinn also works well.

worriedsick100 · 28/04/2014 20:47

So sorry for your loss.

I know a Ioanna - it is pronounced Johannah - also sweet.

I agree that Ianthe is lovely.

TheNumberfaker · 28/04/2014 20:47

Elise Ian Charlotte Quinn

Friedbrain · 28/04/2014 20:49

nai?

Friedbrain · 28/04/2014 20:50

Ian backwards!
