Suggestions for traditional and/or Scottish boys names please?

I'm pregnant with DC1 at the moment, and whilst still quite early days, we are starting to talk about names and are both really struggling with ideas for a boy. Girls' names have always been easier for some reason. So does anyone have any suggestions for traditional and/or Scottish names for boys please?

A couple we like but can't use for various reasons:
Andrew
Thomas
Luke
Oliver
Alexander
Isaac
Fraser
Euan

Middle names already decided, two 1 syllable names after our grandfathers. Surname starts with Mc and is 3 syllables. We'd ideally like something a longer first name which can be shortened if we want. Any ideas please Smile? Thanks!

Met a baby boy Logan last week, thought it was a nice name

barmybunting · 26/04/2014 18:10

There's some lovely ones here we hadn't thought of, thank you! I particularly like Harris.

Chaby, I agree, Logan is a lovely name. Unfortunately I am a Primary School Teacher (although teaching in England now, my previous experience was all in Scotland) and Logan for me is one of those names that will forever be off the list because of a Logan I taught last year. I have also taught 3 lovely Logan's but the one that always comes to mind is the first one and the memories of that year teaching him Wink.

I should have made my OP a bit clearer too I think Smile. Traditional boys names from anywhere are a possibility too, hence options like Isaac and Oliver on the list which I realise are not Scottish originally.

Keep the names coming please, I have a good few more to discuss with DH now!

Harris quite popular in Scotland - no 13 in 2013 - if that matters.

Thanks everyone, some lovely options here! DH and I have a much better list to talk through now. He loves Laurence in particular.

Flora, thanks, that surprised me as I hadn't met any little Harris'es but no 13 for a boys name is something we are ok with I think. I'm off to check all of them on last years lists for Scotland. Thank you!

I know a family with two boys called Harris and Lewis. I wonder if they have a daughter whether they'll go for the Hebridean triple crown and call her Erraid, Rona, Iona or Skye?

Theonlyoneiknow · 27/04/2014 12:26

I LOVE Harris, it's popular though because it's a nice name. Relatively recent rise though as it was about no. 50 when we were looking at names for DS 5 years ago

barmybunting · 27/04/2014 13:25

Funnily enough Megrim, Iona and Rona are strong possibilities for us if this is a girl Smile.

What about Mirren for a girl? I love Iona too though!

PacificDogwood · 27/04/2014 18:04

Oh, oh, I know a little Murren and she is an absolute sweetheart Smile
