Changing surname to Fathers on birth certificate

Hi hoping someone can help me
My dp has had to go abroad for a family emergency. His mother is very seriously ill and it was a life/death situation. However, I need to register the baby as money is a bit tight at the moment with dp obviously not being at work etc. However, as we are not married I cannot put his name on the birth certificate, or go the child his surname. Is this easily added on when he returns home. Iv tried googling it and all that seems to come up is threads about removing the fathers surname not adding it. Obviously dp will give permission/attend registry office etc. I already have a ds and don't want one to have my name and one to have his. If anyone could help that would be great
Thanks

I've got a similar issue but I've spoken to the registry office.

A) regardless of father attending registration you CAN include his name.

B) baby can have your maiden name or fathers surname or a !is of both.

C) if father does not attend registration he will only be "named" this could cause issue with perental responsibility I've been told but only in rare cases.

My issue is I'm still married but not to babies biological father (divorce is messy and complicated) so I panicked thinking do I have to put "husbands" name so rang and spoke to a registrar.

And dp does not need to give permission, if it were the other way round then you would have to fill a form consenting to dp registering baby.

Hope that helps, but you can always phone your registry office to make sure there happy to chat on the phone.

Thanks so much for ur help! Have been getting myself into a right pickle with it all! Its really hard to find any advice on the internet because like I said, it all seems to be the opposite, about getting the name removed, not added on!

I'm pretty sure you can call your child poo poo face if you want :p
so any surname can be used :)
And I think you can name any father you like... but I think they can contest it? or maybe you can get written permission?
Is he going to be back with in 6 weeks of birth?

They can contest the naming of themselves as father but only if they disagree with being listed as the biological father, I think a court then takes over and paternity test done.

Yeah I was the same Google was pointless so just rang the registry office :) they will assure you and talk you through it briefly.

The above all sounds a little jumbled.

To keep it very simple:

If you are not married and your partner cannot attend the birth registration with you, his details cannot be entered onto the birth registration. This will mean that he does not have any parental rights or responsibilities. You can, however, still use his surname for your child.

Subsequently, when he returns to the UK, you can both complete a form for the birth to be re-registered and you must both attend the register office together. At this point he will acquire parental responsibility (and the surname can remain the same).

If you choose to attend the register office without your partner he can complete a statutory declaration beforehand which you can take with you (this will take the place of him being there) but this needs to be witnessed/completed by a relevant person (such as a solicitor) and will cost you money.

Can your local register office not arrange an appointment to register before your partner flies out?
